With the television full of repeats and reality programmes, would like to download or rent films with English subtitles, as I have difficulty following otherwise.
Does anyone have suggestions, or are in the same situation as I am. The choice available seems very limited

Series rather than films - Walter Presents just happened to be featured in yesterday's paper - maybe worth a look. "The Baker and the Beauty" has had excellent reviews (Warning: romantic comedy!). There are dramas too.

A lot of (if not all) Netflix content is subtitled, so if you don't already have a subscription I'd strongly recommend you give it a go. Plenty there to keep you occupied for the next twenty billion years, I reckon.

Newer stuff on Amazon Prime is generally subtitled too.

BBC iPlayer will have subtitles for films shown recently on the BBC.

Plenty of decent foreign TV series available now as well.

Check your local library for DVD/Blurry rentals too. They're usually pretty reasonable price wise and you'll get subtitles that way too. They'll probably have a foreign language section in the bigger libraries.

As already mentioned, Amazon Prime and Netflix have subtitles for MOST movies and TV shows but certainly not all.

Best bet is to rent a physical DVD/BluRay and if you should find that it doesn't have subtitles included on the disk (happens more often than you might expect and usually on the one that you really want to watch!) just download the subtitles from somewhere like opensubtitles and use VLC or similar to play the disk and tell it where the subtitle file is.

Just be aware that downloading the subtitles is not always simple as you will need to ensure that you select the right language and disk version (release version, directors cut etc. etc.). Luckily the subtitles files are quite small and when in doubt, download several alternatives and try each of them in turn until you find the correct one.

Make sure that you check various parts of the movie quickly to ensure that the subtitles are synced correctly before settling down to watch the full thing - gets very annoying when you realise after 10 mins or so that the downloaded subtitles are for a different cut of the movie. We usually skip through to 4 or 5 random points in the movie and if the subtitles are correct then we can actually start watching.

Have to do the above for the wife as she needs subtitles and there are very few movies that we haven't been able to find usable subtitles for - we've even found subtitles for most TV series as well including some old shows.

Hong Kong actioners - The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, Bullet in the Head and of course Hardboiled. Also the originals of Japanese horrors The Ring and The Grudge. Russian - The 9th Company. Korean - Oldboy and The Man from Nowhere. French - Mesrine, A Prophet, La Haine (also 22 Bullets but this might be in English. Can't remember). Not exactly arthouse classics, but plenty entertaining.

Not sure if the OP wants foreign language films with subtitles (as I initially read it, as have others), or is hard of hearing, anyway, apart from the foreign films already mentioned, here are some more with trailers...

Subtitled cinema showings and trailers can be found here - http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/films.html

Most of the major chains should identify subtitled showings on their own sites too.

yes

I also recommend Generation War to anyone who likes Downfall, good for the OP as both are on Netflix

Elite Squad 1+2 are well worth watching, hard hitting Brazilian based on the BOPE police unit, infact I would go as far as to say they are better than City of God

Gommorah if you want a TV series, brutal but excellent
