Sad news, he seemed a lovely funny and intelligent man.

Can someone recommend which of his books to read (not poetry)? I have read Cultural Amnesia but feel inspired to read some more now.

Looks like most of his non-poetry are memoirs or essays - where to start?
Start with 'Unreliable Memoirs'
Seconded!

Watched the 2 "postcards" and now the Mary Beard interview. Takes me right back to watching him in the late 80s/early 90s with my parents. What a wonderful man.

IMO the greatest travel presenter and posssibly greatest broadcaster ever to grace our screens.

Totally agree with all of it. He was so sharp and observant with a twinkle in his eye as he gently mocked whatever situation he was in. The nostalgia was superb watching those old episodes and my wife and I were laughing out loud during the one where he went back to Australia. Such a brilliant journalist and broadcaster.

RIP Mr James and thank you for the fabulous entertainment.
