Monaco - a place where money talks and a bog-standard supercar simply isn't sufficient to stand out

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most famous motorsport events in the world, but the small principality on the French Riviera hosts another internationally renowned car event known as Top Marques Monaco. The supercar and tuner car festival is hosted every April in the Grimaldi Forum, just adjacent to the iconic F1 circuit. A whole host of luxury and performance brands have displays in the show, from the Aston Martin DB10 and Jaguar C-X75 featured in Spectre to the incredible 1,000hp Apollo Arrow.

However, the real stars of the show are not what you can see inside but rather the cars that are to be found on the streets of the principality while the event is on. The density of exotica in the streets during TMM is almost unparalleled anywhere else in the world, even by Monaco standards. This is for three reasons, the first being the tax haven status and the disposable income of the many wealthy residents. Second, the event attracts those from further afield, often in supercars of their own to join the party. And, finally, many of the exhibitors permit their customers a chance to be driven in - or drive - the cars on display around the route of the legendary F1 street circuit.

What does this mean for car nuts like ourselves? You can't turn a single corner in Monaco during TMM without coming across something incredible. Highlights from this year's event include a Gumpert Apollo S which spent all day, every day lapping the town, the full carbon Lamborghini Aventador Hamann Nervudo Roadster and the ridiculous line up of cars that graced the forecourt of the Fairmont Hotel just off what's probably the most famous hairpin in the world.

Next year's show is April 20-23 and promises more of the same!

I've only ever been to Monaco once.
Didn't particularly like it, the town, but the cars!
I sat in Casino square, with the Top Marques show going on.
Wow! The cars driving round the town were amazing.

Proof if proof were needed that money cannot buy taste. Some nice cars there, specced or modified awfully.

This. With bells on lowered, with massive rims, a gold wrap and negative camber

Was just thinking this exactly whilst reading the article. Who ever bardstardised that green Panamera should be shot by the bad taste police.

Top Marques was awful this year. Covered it for Ars and I'd have done better if I'd just gone over for the Historics and the RM auction. The best (worst) bit was the tts running up and down Ave. Princess Grace at full chat until the wee hours of the morning, making it impossible to get any sleep (folks live just opposite the convention center).

Oh, and the 100s of young cretins with cameras hanging outside McDonalds, throwing themselves into the road every time something even vaguely interesting drove past.

Have the cretinous chassis modifications not made the thing lethal to use ?

With the wheels at such daft angles, trying to put 500+ BHP through them, on real roads, surely is a recipe for a spectacular accident long before the bad taste police show up

I went there a few years ago and there were some quite nice cars, and some awful ones.

The two most interesting were the very appealing Roding Roadster, a very well designed and constructed car, which does not photograph well but looks good in reality : https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=roding+roadster+...

And the most bizarre was the Soleil Motors rebodied Corvette : http://gtspirit.com/2012/04/19/monaco-2012-soleil-...

You seem to be assuming that the people that modified it/bought it would be using the car for spirited driving.

Instead what you'll actually find is it doesn't matter if the suspension is ruined because it'll just be driven around places like Monaco at 5mph revving occasionally so that people look.

Yet the seriously wealthy are either driven in the typical luxury car with no fuss, walk, or use a helicopter. They dont usually display a crass need to be seen nor display their lack of taste.

I've tried and failed to find more photos of this Mercedes from other angles.

From the back at least it looks very tastefully done.

Oh god no.
Thanks very much! Now we know why there was only that rear shot, it's its best angle by far!
