I thought about it, but then I went for two 144hz 1080P displays. The smoothness is something else. I prefer having two actual monitors vs. One large one. A friend has an ultrawide and loves it mind you.

I can see the appeal for work, not sure about gaming on it though, I just think the ratio would look a bit odd.

What sort of refresh rate can they go up to?

Also on a traditional 2-3 monitor setup you can setup the 3 screens to display different things in a game, how would that work on 1 ultra wide monitor?

I've got a 34" LG ultrawide, albeit only 1080P, but I really like it. It really is just like having 2x 4:3 screens side by side and the immersion you get in the games is superb. Its also great for watching films and despite the 1080P "handicap" it offers a useful screen real estate, 2 side by side windows look perfect. It also looks the nuts on my desk! smile

(photobucket ain't working too well right now...)

If I could justify the QHD model I would go for that though, however, you're wanting a better GPU than I have (970) and the monitor itself is twice the price, and it just wasn't worth it for me.

I have a 75hz Freesync 3440 monitor and find the ratio much more immersive for gaming. Productivity is excellent with the monitor closely resembling the size and shape of my old setup of 2 24" 1080 screens. I don't know about pixel mapping but I seem to remember that you have a pretty decent graphics setup anyway. Personally I would drop a couple of settings and keep the full resolution. The immersion is way ahead of 16:9 to the point where I almost got dizzy playing Elite Dangerous when I first got the screen!

I have a 2560x1080 29" LG Ultrawide and love it to bits. So much so I doubt I could ever go back to a 16:9 monitor at any time. Most games support it natively with no issues and the immersion is awesome. If you're replacing two monitors though I'd be looking at bigger than 29".

I have a Dell 34" curved ultrawide @ 3440x1440 and love it. For work - two full-size windows next to each other makes it a doddle to work on multiple things concurrently, or to reference one document whilst writing another.

For gaming, it really is more immersive and just fills up your field-of-view beautifully.

Definitely recommended.

You see I don't really get curved TV's as you usually sit so far away that the curve is pretty much pointless IMO but for a monitor, I reckon you'd be close enough to get the proper wraparound effect. Really need to try one.

We have a couple where I work - I'm trying to wangle one now. I prefer them to a pair of monitors as it does away with the annoying bezel in the middle.

I'd like a 21:9, but I want it to be that ratio because it's wider not shorter. Presumably because of HDMI, none of the 21:9 ones seem to maintain the vertical resolution of a 4k monitor with extra horizontal resolution.

I looked into this a while ago and reached the same conclusion. Up to 29" is just about the limit for a flat screen 21:9, beyond that you really need a curved otherwise your eyes are constantly readjusting to read the edges of the display.

I'm running a 3440x1440 centre monitor (a Dell U3415W curved screen) with two old 4:3 1600x1200 monitors rotated into portrait, one either side of it. Works well for me.

Issues I have found is that when maximising windows on the main monitor, things are often *too* wide to the extent that I seldom maximise windows unless they are ones with side bars (see below). But for web browsers it really doesn't work to maximise one.

Also, many games simply don't support this aspect ratio. Fallout4 has been a bit of a nightmare, although mods and patches exist.
Other games work better and in the Firestorm viewer for Second Life it gives some very useful screen real estate as I can tuck chat windows, HUDs, and the like into the edges and have a decent amount of clear screen in the middle.

For work, such as in Visual Studio, it is again very useful as all the side tabs and bars can still be up whist giving plenty of screen space for the editor window. Likewise GIMP in single window mode - all the side bars can be up whilst still having plenty of editing space.

Overall, I don't regret buying it at all, but it has proved more useful for non-game applications than for gaming.

I'm using a 40" screen - 3840x2160. Upgraded from a couple of 1920x1200s and the difference is quite staggering.

A couple of months ago I went from a 3 monitor setup (2 x 23" 1920x1080 plus 1 x 22" 1680x1050) to a single 34" curved 3440 x 1440 monitor (Acer X34 Predator). Never looked back since biggrin

If you're going to use it for the latest games you'll need a hefty graphics card to run things at max detail. I upgraded my 680 to a 1080 and saw a jump in frame rate from 21fps to 100+ in Doom. For games that properly support 21:9 the immersion is fantastic. That said, my wife has now annexed my old monitors and is running 3 x 1920x1080 as a single display and that's pretty damned impressive too, if slightly motion-sickness inducing at times.

For normal use, if you're the sort of person who likes to have their browser window maximised all the time you're going to have to change your habits wink

If you go single large display, then Mizage Divvy is a cracking little utility for quickly sizing/placing windows - Mac & Windows
