I thought he was meant to be 'old' too, the military officer from Avatar would be god, don't know on height, Hemsworth is wrong, too scrawny and pretty...though he might be a good bet since outside of Thor he's not a money maker.
Dave Bautista is more 6'2, but he looks the part for me, not that a few inches is here or there. Depends how nuanced you want your Reacher to be....
Lol, first time I've heard Hemsworth called scrawny!

He is too pretty and probably not enough bad ass-ery or gravitus for Reacher though. Rock is also too "family friendly" and I don't think Bautista quite fits either. It needs someone with a bit of bad boy attitude but I can't actually think of any mainstream stars who fit the bill.

Gerard Butler maybe although that doesn't seem quite right either.

They might actually be better off going with an unknown\new actor.

Armie Hammer after a week at the gym and sleeping in a hedge. 6 foot 5, blond, etc...

Hemsworth blows his arms up for Thor, outside of that he shrinks back down, it's probably only noticeable when he stands next to a proper unit, like Batista, who is huge 24/7. biggrin

Armie Hammer is physically there, Adam Baldwin is good too.
I reckon an unknown would probably be better, considering it's a netflix thing.

I watched 'Never Go Back' a couple of days ago.

It was OK, much like the first one.

I don't really care if Reacher is physically huge, despite what many say, it's not often that much of a factor in the books, it's more that he's not a man who you mess with and I think, mostly, Cruise does a decent job of portraying that.

What I liked less, in both films, was that whilst keeping a lot of the plot of the book, where they messed with it, it seemed to be to the detriment of the film.

The idea of a tv series has some appeal, but you can see it getting pretty samey very quickly, or, worse still, turgid like 'The Punisher' TV series, which has to be one of the dullest things I've ever seen...

Possibly, though, Reacher just doesn't make great screen material?

Willem Dafoe would have made a great Reacher, for me, in terms of 'the look', but he's too small to satisfy those who suggest people like 'The Rock' and too old now.

Maybe someone like Luke Macfarlane. He’s tall, pretty solid and has a decent attitude and isn’t too well-known or typecast or whatever.

Lee Child was on Simon Mayo’s (very good) books podcast. It’s going to be on TV (presumably no Hollywood A list then) and he’d prefer an unknown actor.

I always enjoy a Reacher book, but read two back-to-back and they are very much the same.

So the idea of watching a weekly offering would be just too much IMHO.

that's the point according to the author, Reacher's physicality is intimidating, Cruise isn't.

I’d sort of forgiven Cruise for his height as he does a good job of the acting. But, there’s no denying that a proper big bloke is what’s really needed.

I loved The Punisher and think Jon Bernthal would make a good Jack Reacher, he's not huge but comes across as physically imposing.

Also, Jim Caviezel if they wanted to go with someone a little older.

If Lee Child's has any say in this I'd expect a more faithful adaptation, depends if he just wanted the cheque or not I guess.

Alexander Skarsgard - He's 6'4" and ex-Swedish Military. 42 years old. He'd be a decent choice.

Liev Schrieber would be a good fit, shame he's probably tied to Donovan.

There must be some Game of Throne's actors that could do it...Rory McCann (I think I'll eat all the chickens).

He's not - currently airing Ray Donovan (NYC) is the last ever as far as I recall.

Rory getting a gig like that after GoT finishing could be very watchable.

Armie Hammer or Michael Shannon would both be good I think.

That's a good shout - very good actor which I think you'd need as Reacher is a man of few words but still has a bit of depth that would need to be conveyed.

He could also do 'world weary' and grizzled better than some of the others mentioned.

Armie Hammer could be good but he's a bit too clean for me.

Maybe we're all completely overthinking this and John Cena will get the role..

Watching Ray Donovan last night I thought he would make a great Reacher. Probably need to bulk up a little more though.

Yeah, I know he's saying that NOW (Obviously wasn't much of a problem when he signed the rights over, was it? I guess Tom Cruise was much taller then! biggrin), but I struggle to think of more than a handful of cases where his 'hugeness' is really that important to the action.

Sometimes, it's a handicap, as he stands out like a sore thumb, but from my recollections, he's more often fast and attentive to what's going on than beating up a load of little guys or, except here and there, discouraging a fight by his mere size (There's a bit in the Midnight Line where they decide not to rough him up because he looks tough, but again, it's not 100% 'oh, he's big, better not fight him', it's 'He's not a man to mess with...')

I get the impression that if Lee Child had been a 5ft 3in bald Italian, Reacher would have been too, but really hardcore biggrin

I can't see the actor who plays the Punisher being a good fit, he just doesn't look 'Major-ly', but maybe he could.

Jim Cavaziel would be a good fit in some ways, but someone will find it unacceptable that he's not blond...

Perhaps we could have a woman playing him? wink

Yes he would be a good shout actually and he can bulk up if required as can be seen in the Wolverine film when he played Sabretooth.
