Out of interest, if like many you're just rolling over your contract and on some legacy contract (I'm thinking of my parents and in-laws), is there any downside to phoning up to cancel?

On both occasions we've cancelled we've immediately been offered 60% off existing packages on the phone. When rejecting that we've then been bombarded with calls, emails, texts to come back with ever better offers.

As far as I can tell if for some odd reason they never offered you anything at all in that time period you could just phone them on day 30 and retract your cancellation with no penalty.

My Dad is paying about £90 for the exact same package we were paying £25 for (which we were then offered for £30), mainly because he signed up about 10 years ago and has never done anything else. Similar for the in-laws.

Having worked at Sky, I can tell you that the discount retention can offer you will be %linked to the original price you paid for any services and how long you have been with them. The bigger the discount you get at the point of joining Sky, the better the discount they are able to give you at the end of each year, but it's all intrinsically linked to a target income per household over a period of time (the LTV - target 'life time value' revenue income for Sky).
Really interesting to get an explanation of what to the outsider seemed like an entirely arbitrary process of getting a discount. Thanks.

I entirely understand the reasons why they do it - and I suppose they make perfect commercial sense - but it seems rather unfair that if you happened to have signed up on "standard" terms, you're never likely to get the better discounts that others do.

It does seem as if the only way you're going to get them if you do fall into that category is call Sky's bluff, cancel and then wait to see what is offered to woo you back.....

I have just cancelled the TV yesterday, looking to move the whole shebang to BT but they said to leave the BB in place and BT will take it over

They've never let me get this far in the process before, now its a 30 day game of who blinks first, hoping it will be them but happy to let it cancel if not

Does anyone know if when I cancel my wife can ring up? Or is it surname and address based?

smile fingers crossed

I would really like a new box which is where I think I'll be pushing it, although looking at some of the deals mentioned I should be able to get something

I had about 25 calls in my notice period, followed by weekly e-mails with increasing discounts - now inc Sky Q for free and 60% off all bundles for 12 months.

My Virgin has 11 months to go - they may be paying me to take it by then!!

We've got the Sky HD+ Box sets package (no sports/movies) with phone line and broadband which we pay a £63 a month for in total and have done so for last 30 months. For personal reasons really need to trim down our spending for a couple of months so would happily cancel it and start again in May.

However, do need to have broadband during that period and the options for this look expensive (I assume they are subsidised by the telly packages) and would tie me down for a long term contract. Seems it would put us in a worse position longer term to go down that route.

What realistically might a threat to cancel get us - do we have a hope in hell of halving the overall monthly cost?

I would say you have a good chance of negotiating a deal where you pay about half that, if you actually go through with the cancellation.

Out of interest, I regularly do online surveys over breakfast , for Nectatr points. A bit sad I know, but falls in with checking my emails.

Sky have been doing an awful lot of consumer research over the past few months, and the interesting bit was the survey I did a couple of days ago.

Basically the survey consisted of floating a number of packages at different prices, seeing if the particiapant woud take them up. Basically, what they were offering from a base price as low as £12 , was a far more modular subscription basis . For example, Documentaries, Discovery etc was an additional fiver . Other options, box sets, movies, HD/UHD etc attracted differing tariffs . What was also offered was discounts for varying subscription periods with as much as £7 (May have been more) for up to 24 months. All the packages I chose were under £20 a month.

A bit vague, but there were so many options thrown, its impossible to recall them all.

Migeh be worth keeping eayes peeled, I get the impression they are losing a lot of subscribers , and new cheaper subs options are being seriously considered.

Similar position here, with a just over a week to go. Sky customer for over 20yrs and no contact whatsoever - assumed they would have made some effort to retain my custom, so not sure how you others that have been getting calls/emails are more valuable to them?

Took about two weeks and then I got six moths of full package for free, just make sure you answer those withheld number phone calls...

I feel the same way at £44.

It's going shortly to be replaced with streaming services. I have Now TV, Amazon Prime and Netflix. It's enough. More than enough. And half the price. And I have them ANYWAY!

Wondering if I will get some sort of Freesat or Freeview HD recorder.

Another recommendation for Bagga here.

I was paying £44.50/pcm for the Sky Variety HD package and he has arranged a new contract for the Sky Q Box Sets package for £19/pcm for 18 months.
A great £25.50 a month saving and upgrade to Sky Q when my existing HD box is regularly crashing is very welcome!

The Sky retentions department for my existing contract couldn't get anywhere near as good a deal.
Thanks again Bagga! I would recommend him to anyone else who's looking to get a better deal on Sky and it was an absolute pleasure to deal with him.

We cancelled our sky tv package a few weeks back.
When there was a possibility of sky loosing Discovery channel etc myself and my wife started looking around at what is on offer.
We are previous virgin media customers and that wasn't a option as the service from virgin locally just didn't work for us when we tried it a couple of years back.

We were sure even if sky kept discovery that the cost for tv each month was a bit silly.

We ended up going with BT. We already get phone, internet & kids mobiles from BT so if it all works as it should made sense.
Its been in place for a couple of weeks & so far so good.
Some of the features from sky are missing but we have a large percentage of what we watched normally for 1/10th of the cost each month.

As a bonus I ended up with a couldn't refuse mobile phone deal, sim only, thrown in that I have changed my mobile phone provider to BT too.
The kids have been using BT mobile for a while & no problems with it so why not.

The savings on TV/mobile phone will make a nice bonus when it comes to xmas if we continue to put the same in the bank each month.

Over the last few weeks there has been at least a phone call each day to both my phone and my wifes phone from sky trying to change our mind and go back as a customer.

I just cancelled after a very sluggish webchat where they offered me 10 months of 40% discount from my legacy Sky HD F1 package. They offered me Sport and Movies and the whole lot for £36ish, but I don't want the rest of it.
