The first series of New Top Gear can be pretty agonising at times as you watch it back, especially Jeremy trying to get a bit of spark out of Jason Dawe and probably resenting the fact James May wasn't chosen instead for that series.

That was interesting thanks. For only the 2nd ever episode they are already well into their stride and Clarkson is on fine form. The natural banter there is in stark contrast and superior to the scripted stuff in the new GT. Hammond is very relaxed and likeable too.

So what's the story with the fat chap then, I can't ever remember him. Is he like the 5th Beatle then, what's he done since?

Just watched ep 4.
I have to say I really enjoyed it....well 14 minutes of it.
The other 1hr 4 minutes were frankly embarassing.
I can almost actually see a 'new' TG thread dissolving into hateful rage filled fake laughter after Matt Le Blanc revealed Chris Evans behind the bumper of a TT and then proceeded to use him as a reversing aid.
At it's best so far you could eadily replace these 3 with CE et al with no loss of 'entertainment'....whilst re-eatablishing the originals into 'new' TG and the fans would laugh like drains as they drove around Blackpool in Reliants.
Really rather undermines the Beeb jibes...as this is really woeful considering the earth shattering budget and 'off the leash' content...

Still, I wait for the emergence of what made them great...or at least watchable.

If it was the next series of top gear then it would rank as "Ok" but it isn't. It's had a pile of cash spent on it, it was an opportunity for the people involved to do something new, it's been massively hyped and it's the same old stuff that was getting boring on Top Gear.

The only good bit of the four episodes was pootling round Italy last week.

I bought Prime expecting this to be something really entertaining, it isn't. Luckily I've enjoyed The Last Man on Earth (roll on series 3) and The 100 (mainly for Marie Avgeropoulos admittedly) so I'm not bothered.

The move hasn't changed a thing. It's padded out with boring chat and hit-and-miss segments which are either good or the stale old stuff they've been doing forever. Hammond still is a one ( not very good ) trick pony and a leech on Jeremy's arse you wish he'd sit down and squish.
Like F1 , I used to watch all the time, but now don't really feel like I've missed out if I don't see it.
The Guardian article is on the money, in that after the initial return, the show still has the same old stuff that was making TG stale.

If the current TG was filled with 4 or so segments of actual car stuff and dropped the old stuff of staged races, calamity, celebrity ( D listers ) tossers plugging crap, Robin Reliants and the Clarkson era stuff they can't , and shouldn't, compete with, they might actually be able to produce a better show. Failing that, let Harris get back to making superb YT vids please.

The first third was fine. Better than fine, it was really rather good. Maybe if they had edited out the American driver and shown the GT3RS lap, it would have been the first half of the programme instead. Informative, entertaining, blah blah. The rest was a 20 minute item that took 45 minutes.

Clarkson, Hammond and May are as good as they have always been, alas the characters they seem to be forced to play are tedious. I think in the past they would have used something like recycled tin cans, wood and papier maché to re-body the cars, which would have taken longer to prepare, but might have given them more opportunity for challenges and stunts.

Feel their fundamental reasons for success are such that the massive budget hinders rather than helps, it just doesn't sit quite right, kind of like the Queen getting a fake tan.

Episode 4 is 62 minutes long, not 78. Were you watching the wrong show? biggrin

I watch it for 2 reasons - amazing cars filmed beautifully being put through their paces and reviewed - for example it was fascinating listening to Clarkson talk about the M4 GTS, who'd have thought BMW would produce such a dog (according to Clarkson) and the genuine banter between the three (mainly Clarkson and May as Hammond has always been a presenter rather than a journalist.) Thats why I could live with the tedious Hammond-is-such-a-yob-in-his-American-Musclecar in ep 3, there were enough moments of genuine (at least what seemed like genuine) banter and laughter. I ff through all the bits I am not interested in - the "comedy" chat, celebrity stunts and ridiculous pieces like the special forces bit.

Just give me unscripted genuine chat about cars or car related stuff. I fear that now they have this mega budget that they won't go back to the budget bangers stuff. All they have to do is just get a crew to follow them around - enter a few genuine races - remember that endurance race with the BMW 330, or the Italian Supercar for less that £10k??. I realise that they can't do this every week but when was the last time they did anything as good as those ones I've mentioned?
Good point all of which I agree with

show 4 was so bad I don;t think i'll be watching show 5, but at least I get my purchases delivered next day with Amazon Prime!

And dare I say it, GT is not as good as the Chris Evans Top Gear????

Chris EVans' new Top Gear was actually ok for car content. (Apart from siarpRc) . Just delivery by the presenters was terrible. It was attacked from all sides by experts on the internet.

However, the first few series of Clarcksons Top Gear was naff too, until it was allowed to develop.

The same will likely be the case with Grand tour.

However, the big difference with GT is that everyone wants to be a critic, everyone wants a perfect program for them. And everyone now has the internet to whinge about it when it fails to be their version of perfection.

But what has to be remembered is that it's not just for you. There will be parts or even episodes that you don't like. Well, guess what, that's just tough st. Either roll with it or risk losing it.

If you really can't stand it, then for Fuchs sake stop watching it! You have choice. You don't have to stay up late just so you can jump on this thread and be the first to slag it off.

I'd love to know if it's the same poster slagging GT that were slagging TG last year, or the same people slagging the old TG.
If you didn't enjoy episode 4 then GT will never be for you because this is what CHM do. Stop watching it and waste your life some other way.

Your memory must be hazy; have a quick reminder of Chris Evans on Top Gear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrQyfjRdHB4

The point being, surely, that if people were to just 'stop watching' then it gets pulled at the first opportunity. Amazon aren't a charity. Paradoxically, people watching it, hating it and commenting on it are probably going to keep the GT afloat.

I think middle of the road top gear sums that up.

Some of it was a bit predictable / staged but I enjoyed the episode. Great to see some genuine laughter in their too .. that's what it's about for me.

Thoroughly enjoying the series, there has been the odd naff moment, but overall, good fun. Watched Ep 4 last night, some hilarious quips, and the skit about Clarkson's car being eaten by a dog , really made me hoot. Looking forward to future episodes.

Pretty sure showbiz doesn't work quite like that!

The best so far. Mostly it was silly, and it seemed more bickering than script, but that's the right recipe for me.

Seems very straight forward to me

If you like TG you'll like GT
If you liked bits of TG you'll like bits of GT

If you felt TG was getting a little tired and needed a refresh and thought GT was an opportunity to do this you may be disappointed
pretty much nailed it

Anyone notice the stairway to heaven lyrics between jc and Hammond? Bustle in your hedgerow...
yup - did make me chortle.

The bone car was kinda gross (with some funny bits thrown in). Overall I think E2 has been the runaway worst epi thus far (but then again I really enjoy E3 so what do I know?)
