So I got Prime membership.

Let's see what TGT is like I thought...

First one was just fine, like a pair of comfy Top Gear slippers with The Stig's head on them. Ahhh!

And then I watched some more...

Dear me it's dreadful. Perhaps I have finally noticed how bad the CMH Top Gear had become? I gave up after the stupid thing with the Land Rover Eco cars made out of mud etc. I realised I was fast forwarding and skipping through chunks of it. I think TG with Evans in it was better.

Fortunately I quite like "The Man In The High Castle" so all is not lost.
Personally, I thought there was absolutely nothing wrong with the last series of CMH TG. The trouble is the new show sucks and people that moan about TGT being too much like old TG are just wrong.

Take TGT lap times as no more than a bit of fun.
I wouldn't do otherwise. Didn't they used to add a second and a bit on for a wet lap in the old TG or was that me automatically adjusting?
That was you automatically adjusting. They only marked if it was wet, damp, mildly moist or a few other things. They never adjusted the times.

Indeed. They may have verbally commented "that would probably be a **:** in the dry" but they would still post the actual time, not an adjusted time.

But Clarkson would sometimes say "the Stig reckons it's about 2 seconds (might have been 4 seconds) slower in the wet so that would have put you... here". And someone (might have been Jenson Button) said "it's not 2 seconds in that car".

Clarkson had this discussion with Mark Webber when he went into the studio. Clarkson said that they thought the Liana lost 4 seconds in the wet. Webber said it was nowhere near that.

It's far too hard to judge and account for the individual circumstances and conditions.

When watching TGT hot laps I can't help but feel they are slow. They don't look anywhere near the limit of the car. You'd be dead if you went off into trees so it's understandable.

They really need a far better track.

He got a lot of internet love for that piece. I think he is potentially more in touch with (my and the same 5 people on the same thread whinging over, and over, and over) overall perception of the show. That it is not anywhere near as good as it should be.

I think he will be banging the table for the "disappointed" fans. This quote is him trying to tell people to stick with it, it will get better.

As Mr Porter has hinted the same thing, I'm kind of thinking you are talking Horlicks, as usual.

//edit - not hinted, flat out come out and said there will be more like that next season.

3 attempts and I still had to try and work out what you were saying. Dumb arse!

WRT Mr Porter. If he said the sky was blue Id check. Sniff Petrol started out interesting and fun. Then it became lazy and ste. just like his "oh so funny" top gear scripts. The fact he was retained by TGT and the biggest bug bear is the poor scripting tells me he's not as good as he thinks he is...

Watched 7 episodes of that before I gave up. Glacial and doesn't flow at all IMO. Actually I'll say it. It was boring!

I kinda wish it had been set in present day as well. The whole idea has legs. But it was woeful imo. And from reading online reviews S02 is even worse!

On a completely personal note the Japanese Finance ministers (Tagomi) glasses remind me of my Grandad who had a pair just like them. smile

They had (and possibly still have) a lot of goodwill. Most of us really wanted it to be brilliant and successful, I don't know anyone who wanted it to fail.

"I'm not angry, I'm just very disappointed."

We know they can do great TV let's hope they find out how to do it again.

I can understand how disappointed some people are if they signed up to Amazon Prime just for this show - the weight of expectation must be immense, and hence the disappointment must be hugely more also.

I've been a member of Amazon Prime since it was effectively just a pre-payment on postage, way before video, music, and the like were added, so I consider Prime Video (and hence TGT) to be simply a bonus.

I imagine most signed up for the 30 day free trial, and if they were unimpressed cancelled it on day 30.

I would have done the same but like you had Prime anyway, as it was reduced to £59 and I regularly shop at Amazon

interesting Netflix has shown moving to original material has massively boosted subscribers. So I think something like TGT, even thou it might be dumbed down rubbish appealing to the lowest common dominator, it will be here to stay.

And Netflix has topgear already, so more than anyone, knows exactly how much this kind of show is worth, They we're happy for it to go to Amazon.

Netflix

"When asked why Netflix didn’t purchase the rights to The Grand Tour, despite having Top Gear streaming on the service, boss Ted Sarandos explained the show wasn’t worth the amount Amazon paid"

I'm sure he's lying and you know best though, hehe

I can't see an inconsistency there. Amazon paid more than Netflix were prepared to.

Maybe Amazon didn't know what it was worth to them and Netflix know better than they do. hehe

Turns out Netflix were very keen for TGT to be on their service, but couldn't compete with Amazon financially.

From Reed Hastings @ Netflix

"We bid on Jeremy Clarkson's show and they bid more. By the time they won it, we were like 'Wow, that's a lot of money.' Maybe it'll work for them, it might well. It could be a great show. You can't tell until you've seen it. We lost on that one; there's other ones we won."

Netflex' respinse appeared to be to try to get the rights for the Chris Evans series of Top Gear.....
