I'm beginning to get a bit fustrated with Guy failing to prepare properly for just about all these 'challenges'.
No real training, the wrong bike, poor kit, but bks the size of spacehoppers to make up for it, not sure beating someone that wasn't actually trying to set a fast time is that much of a big thing, be interested to see how quick Team Sky could polish the trip off.
Don't fall for the "no real training", he's a very accomplished MTB racer and has placed in a number of UK 24hr races. Earlier this year he rode the USA Great Divide race (something like 3000 miles pretty much non stop).

I wondered why he was so fit. He made it look like "I know why don't I try and break the record for the desert crossing...... tomorrow. Right, lets get some bananas, some snickers, grapes a kebab and an early night, that should do it" For one man on his own I thought it was still a huge effort.clap

Makes for decent watching though, much better than c-list slebs in a jungle, x-factor crap, towie ste, etc.

Or d-list slebs training for a much shorter bike ride, as was on channel 5.

I liked the series.

But watching it on catch up I was pointed towards this:

Different but a great watch.

Really got to respect banging out 341 miles on a single speed bike.

Set a benchmark now so other endurance cyclists may be inspired to have a go (Will a more open China encourage it?). No doubt with a geared road racer the outright record will be beaten but he has half a chance of keeping the single speed record as a subcategory for some time.

Great show, opened my eyes, thought it was respectful and not patronising view of China (well in a short space of episodes)

Loved how he sneaked out to a scrap yard and then ended up driving the lorries round the docks

Very enjoyable.
But I guess most decent cyclists could roll up & break a world record - where no decent cyclist had ridden before..
You'd have to be famous though to have TV show to big it up smile

Loved this series and really like watching Guy, he's such a unique character.

He's also a very special kind of machine with his cycling stuff, single speed well worn old bike and not dressed head to toe like a TDF racer. Even finds time to talk to people along the way, incredible stuff.

An update today on his Facebook page about his round Britain ride. Yes that's 11,000 miles he's cycled this year...

https://www.facebook.com/GuyMartinRacing/

Update on Guy’s around Britain cycle ride:
Guy:
"Well it’s not gone quite to plan.

"I"ve cycled over 11,000 miles this year, including the Tour Divide in America, to and from work most days and I spent three weeks in China in October, back for a few days at work, straight to New Zealand for ten days racing motorbikes, back for a few days at work and then off.

"I badly pulled my achilles tendon on the left side after a day or so but thought I'd just get my head down and work through it. I kept good miles up and got to John O’Groats from Grimsby in 4 days and 8 hours, about 800 miles.

But my leg was getting worse and I thought I could keep going and maybe do the whole lot in 30 days but I knew I'd be jiggered for a long time after and maybe even have serious long term damage, which would mean I couldn’t do the serious cycle trip I've got in my head for next year.

So I've put my push bike back in the shed for the rest of the year, giving my leg a chance to recover. I'm back at work and I realise I need to listen to my body more. By just manning up I was papering over the cracks. Thanks very much for the support, loads of folk wishing me well and that was mega.
"It is what it is and like I said ‘Ive got to stop it before it stops me’ and it did stop me."

Unfortunately not frown thought it was on too until seeing the TV planner - something else on instead.

Thought I'd missed it for a minute there, even though I knew the outcome. It wouldn't really have made much of a programme though. I hope he has another crack at it in the future.
