There was a shot of a photo of his old house with a Ferrari and a Corvette outside.
Corvette was a 1979 gift from his record co. The Ferrari was a couple of years later. Both long gone (I was a bit of a fan in those days)

On a bit of a tangent, I think that Gary is a bit of a petrolhead isn't he?
He likes his planes too. I remember attending an air show in Cornwall (either RAF St Mawgan which is now Newquay airport or RNAS Culdrose, can't quite remember which as I went to both a few times) and seeing him do a display.

He actually got so good at it, he used to be an examiner for new display pilots. His wife put a stop to it though - most of his friends from his flying days were killed, ultimately.

Sign of the times, that is - once upon a time, you heard an artist and went and bought stuff if you liked it. The artist made a few quid. Now people go to spotify and the artist gets about a millionth of a penny.
It is a sign of the times but that's how markets change, Spotify is one of many new income streams for artists. They make less money per source but there are many more sources and it's so much more accessible to the public as a result. I've got many artists on my Spotify list that I'd never have considered buying the album for and I suspect that's now pretty common.

Music, like all modern media, is no longer something we own as we just rent it.

A tale about his visit to St. Mawgan, as told to me by a young Nav I met.
GN stayed in the Officers Mess and was just wanting a quiet evening in his room, shying away from anything social. Being advised that the crusty old occupants of the mess were not of fan age, assuring him of a quiet and peaceful drink he was persuaded to leave his room.
As he got to the last few steps of the staircase the Nav, the one youth, roared out GAZZA!!!!!
A perfect set up if it had been planned. He took it well apparently.

He'd have probably been even happier if it was a female fan hehe

His Corvette was used in the video for "I die, you die" video.

So I guess that made it tax deductible biggrin

It ended up going to his brother, in a bit of a state, some years later. I only know that as I had a mate who wanted to buy it off Numan when it was for sale. AFAIK it got sold on in a worse state so may well be gone now.

He had a Ferrari 512BB in 1982/83 and spent a few months on Jersey for tax reasons. Stupidly he took the Ferrari with him and (in his words) "almost went through a clutch a week" due to the speed restrictions on the island at the time. Think he's got his petrolhead thing out of his system now - before he emigrated he had a 4x4 and a SMART car...

Yes, there was certainly nothing special in view at that pink house he was packing up from.

Didn't he have a serious accident in his plane, or am I thinking of someone else? I've got some vague memory of a story involving him almost getting killed.

That house was a horrible colour... Yes, he flew around the world in 1981 and had to stop in Pakistan for repairs...got arrested for flying over a military base or something. And a year or two later, crashlanded next to a motorway due to some engine problem I think. He's actually an excellent pilot, or was back then, as it could have been much worse than it was. So only minor injuries I think. The press and media pretty much reported him as a clown back then.

Ah right, thanks. Given our respective locations, it could have been a bloke I know who was a dead ringer for him.

Walk into any Numan gig and you'll be spoilt for choice on lookeylikeys. The difference is these days they're often more portly and balding.

Started watching this earlier with the intention of completing it in 2 or 3 stints. Absolutely mesmerising, I didn't stir for the whole thing. Despite his issues (neuroses?), he's a top bloke and really down to earth. I think I'll watch it again at some point.

Gary used to have a TVR Cerbera 4.5 after the 512BB and Corvette. Did some trackdays and club-level karting too.

Cool story bro': when he lived in Essex his wife (Gemma) used to do my wife's nails. At the time we were in a 2 up and 2 down, and she parked her Ferrari in our allocated parking bay. Seemed pretty normal -- we had some chit chat about George Michael.

I split this into two views, probably the best music documentary I have ever seen.

Splinter is a fine album, go buy it.

Just watched it. Always impressed at how articulate and open Gary is in interviews, considering he's pretty high up the spectrum. Listening to Splinter now.

Watched the 1hr Tubular Bells documentary straight afterwards. Mike Oldfield is a similar character in many ways.

Am a big Oldfield fan. A bit of a depressive, from accounts by people who've known him. I guess being by the sea is one of his ways of dealing with that. Wish I had an ounce of his talent though.
