Bit of a thread resurrection….
Mrs DS and I have been watching all of these and thee is one thing that really strikes me and would make what they did with a chateau like that in that state in France almost totally impossible in the UK.
Here it would be a listed building - just imagine the bureaucratic nightmare, the restrictions on materials and changes. Then there’d be planning permission, building control. English Heritage wouldn’t let you move a finger.
Nothing like that has been mentioned with regard to similar French restrictions.

France has MH (Monument Historique) listings. Due to the sheer number of 'chateaux' in France, many go unlisted. But even then, the 'listed' properties aren't subject to the same regulations as listed properties in the UK.
