We could have 2 minute films on keep left unless overtaking, importance of matching speed when on slip roads - don't just move L1 to L2 when it's quiet, common first aid techniques, upcoming infrastructure projects etc

Aimed mainly at the BBC as it is the 'state broadcaster' and it wouldn't cost as much (to my uneducated mind)

I think you'd be more likely to hit the 'target audience' if you broadcast in the middle of Hollyoaks, Emmerdale, I'm a Celeb or Big Brother.

But maybe I'm being a snob.

Remember the ones they used to show you in school? Don't play inside fridges, don't climb electricity pylons (this one always baffled me as I live in a town devoid of pylons so I'm not sure what I'd be doing out in the country on my own at 8yrs old climbing pylons), don't mess around in substations, etc. Do they still show kids these?

haha, this was the exact one!

and the substation one:

they're all as I rememebred

I recall a Green Cross Code one, featuring a kid walking back from the fair, holding a coconut he'd won, with a real parrot perched on it, and the parrot would remind him about the green cross code.

My granddad would say, every time it came on "fk me, that parrot's laid a big egg."

I remember our year sitting on a tiled floor during assembly and being made to sit through this back in the late 70's.

Scared the absolute crap out of me, and probably gave me piles as well. It's 30 minutes of nostalgia.

There was another one about kids on a building site , one scene I remember is a kid hitting his head and there being a chunk of flesh left over. It actually didn't do anything to put us kids off playing on sites, as that's where we spent a fair bit of time, but it did warn us of stuff we might not attempt.

Secondly, I'm not sure, maybe the PH massive can answer a question here, the bloke in this info film around the 2:45 mark onwards driving the blue cortina, is that Jeremy Bulloch who played Boba Fett in Star Wars?. I've done a google search and it looks like him in his younger days, although my mate begs to differ.

To answer the OP's question - money. HM Government don't want to spend money education the populace.

They make lots of legislative changes that directly affect us, not just regarding motoring.

It is rather insidious. They expect us to learn about these changes by some sort of process of osmosis. And, if you don't realise you have a legal obligation to do something but fail to do it, it's YOUR fault.

This is particularly true over the upcoming massive tax changes that they are hardly mentioning. They didn't even get mentioned in the Chancellor's recent Autumn Statement. And yet they are the most important changes to the tax system in a generation.

I bet most people on here are hardly aware of them but they will affect everybody. And, as it currently stands, they start in just over one year's time.

The government has informed professional tax advisers that they will NOT be running a public information campaign on this.

I see this has been shifted to TV and Radio which I think is a bit of a mistake. I suppose the word "film" in the title is what caused that. However, the problem is much bigger than just lack of film and TV campaigns. The government has an obligation to inform its citizens of significant changes to the way the country is run and how citizens are expected to fulfill their legal obligations. Merely setting up a few web pages and hoping people will find them by accident does not constitute "informing the public".

Perhaps you could provide a link to a concise resume of said tax changes??
Thanks in advance

I've been referring to it in the financial and business sections of PH over the past couple of months.

That's Duncan Preston, big collaborator with Victoria Wood in many things.

The Australians have some brilliant public information films, I particularly like this one form a few years back.

They've had some good ones about drivers using mobile phones too.

Well spotted that man, although I now have to make the tea at work up until Christmas as a result of my poor recognition skills. I liked the "sketchly special" aerial on the cortina though!

I've noticed you posting quite often about this. Time to make a thread in Finance?

We will be getting a response from HMRC in January following the Consultation Document Review. Things should be clearer after that. I think a thread specifically on Making Tax Digital would be a good idea as soon as we know the full details.

We could also start a thread on 'Obscure laws to catch you out and take money from you'.

Thanks for the heads up on the future of self employed and HMRC btw, not sure how it will affect me as I employ an accountant to do all that, but nevertheless forewarned is forearmed.
