They estimate that they've destroyed around 2000 cars making the franchise. (Approx 250 per film)

A lot of them interesting/classics.

I don't normally get all "doe eyed" over a car or 2 being mashed. But it does seem a colossal waste. Especially since they aren't buying stters. But half decent examples of cars that aren't necessarily in production anymore. Eg Loads of Mk1 escorts were lost as were quite a few E60 M5's (they all get crushed after filming) I daresay they've lost some American Muscle too.

I suggest to the court that actually Fast&Furious is funded by the green lobby biggrin
There is a video that has recently appeared on YT where the guy who sorts all the cars for movies talks about the main cars in each film (very briefly mind as there are a lot to get through). From what I picked up though, many of the older cars are done so that they have 1 hero car for static shots and a bit of driving and anything used for stunts or to be destroyed is a replica. They didn't say though whether the replicas are made from similar donor cars or whether they are tube chassis with an engine and body panels made to look like a particular car.

I think the latter is quite possible for the american cars as there are plenty of places in the US that will stamp you out fenders, wings and doors etc for old classics if you aren't bothered much for total originality.

Newer cars like the Chargers from the 5th film, (the police cars), well they make one every couple of minutes.... though they did say those cars were prototypes and would be crushed anyway.

I saw it during the week and have mixed feelings about it.

Yes, it feels like the dead horse has been flogged so much its now lasagne, and that some of the acting is truly awful (squarely aimed at Tyrese Gibson) however, as has been mentioned, its a good entertaining film if you want to watch something you don't really have to concentrate on for a couple of hours.

Statham and The Rock were great in this, and I have to say that without them, the film would be getting a 3 out of 10 from me.
I agree it does seem to be flogging a dead horse, but its a serious cash cow for the studio so you can see why everyone film is becoming bigger with more stunts and action scenes. Already 9 and 10 have been given release dates.

Some of the characters did seem a bit uncomfortable in these Tyrese and the new girl who plays Ramsey (very english wooden performance). I like Statham in this one, and showed his ability doing stunts, and alot more comfortable in front of the camera.

It becomes more and more ridiculous as a film but easy watch.
I re-watched 5 last night. I think it is my favorite one outside of the 1st one. Yes the safe thing is just un-realistic, but a lot of the guff going on around it has a lot of reality in it and they at least attempt to take a realistic approach to planning their dumb heist. One thing I did note though.... one guy actually got shot and died and others had bit of ketchup running down their faces after fights and explosions! In 8, Vin Diesel is for all intents and purposes, invincible.

That was funny. Two big crashes involving Vin Diesel and in both occasions no cuts or injuries, just a slightly dirty face.

If Mr Diesel can launch himself from a car travelling at approx 100mph to catch Letty mid-air across a bridge and then land back first onto a car windscreen withut a scratch...of course he is invincible!

.
A lot of the cars you see get destroyed are already destined for the crusher as you say.

On a similar note, I recall one of the Transformers movie had the "highest vehicle destruction rate" at one point because of a few scenes.

Nearly all of the cars in that scene were insurance write offs from the Lousiana floods that had occurred around the time of production, and so the whole lot were bought cheaply. Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of similar tactics were used in this franchise as well.

What makes me laugh is that in FF1 they were just a crew into their cars who robbed others for money.
And they have morphed into some elite crime fighters that the government use rather than military/Feds/agents etc etc!

In FF7 vin went down a whole mountain in a car that was destroyed and had barely a cut. He is basically a superhero now!

This franchise has just morphed into something so far from the original it's not really the same thing anymore. It's more like a comedy. For which I'm not hating, just enjoying in a cringey kinda way.

That's kind of what I was telling myself all the way through watching FF8, in the world it's set in these guys are actually superheroes and can do impossible things.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as any of the previous ones, I hope they take a different direction in the future tbh....

I suspect the replica idea is what they will do for the classic or valuable cars. it's been done before - I know that for the Need for Speed film, all the hypercars that get destroyed were all silhouette spaceframe replicas.

Saw it lastnight. Yes it's silly and ignores physics, yes the British girl was terrible, yes Charlie Theron's character was 2 dimensional as a baddie, yes the baby was the best actor and character in the film... that kid's going to go far hehe

If you've been thinking Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham should do a buddy cop movie, you're in luck. As well as FF9 and FF10, there's going to be a spin off http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/fast-and-furious/...

Cool cars, women I'd give my right arm to disappoint for 30 seconds, guns, explosions and general cool st. All boxes ticked and enjoyable in a way an action film should be.

It is a shame it doesn't follow the hardcore car based fun of the first couple but it'd be hard to drag 8 films out of that so an evolution was always going to happen.

As for the spin off, I don't doubt a Johnson/Statham action film would be good but it doesn't need to be a franchise spin off. It'd make money off its own back.

You missed the whole launch sequence bit perhaps? It was glossed over but it was happening.

What I want to know is..

At the beginning of the movie, after the first street race, Dom is quickly surrounded by a big group of children, and he stands up and is holding a little girl when he looks over and smiles at Lettie.

WHO'S CHILD IS THAT? WHY IS HE PICKING HER UP? Its just weird!

Tango and Cash is probably due a remake. Which I am not saying would be a good thing...
