Very wealthy media magnate of the turn of the century

The Gordon Bennett Trophy was the forerunner of the French GP and the place where national racing colours were first used

I've often pondered the question about why the Dambusters has made such a marque in folklore. Was it because of the fil, or was the film because of it

An audacious strike at the heart of Germany at a time when the invasion was still a year away and the allies still felt quite on the back foot. Tactically useful (certainly more so than area bombing) - though certainly not a killer blow. It's certainly not in the top 10 of objectively militarily useful operations of the war. It's psychological advantage to the Brotish was certainly important.

It's an interesting question.

You can't even use the word "coloured" these days. I used it the other day in front of a friend to describe someone of mixed race, and got a right b*llocking. I'm from an older generation, and I find the whole thing very frustrating.
I so agree. So friggin confusing these days confused

Out of interest what word or description did your friends (or now, ex-friends seing as you're now officially a racist!) suggest you should have used instead?
Black. Apparently anyone with any tinge to their skin is now black. My friend (still) pointed out to me that it is we European whites who are coloured - mankind originated in Africa, and our pigmentation changed as a result of climate and diet as we progressively moved away from the Equator. I haven't bothered to check this.

I have a really good friend who is Chinese and bemoans the fact that her skin is yellow (her word). I have tried to placate her with the above explanation which does make scientific sense, but like all Chinese women she wants to be white. Yet if a British white person called her yellow we would possibly be committing an offence under today's PC rules. The whole thing is a minefield.
BLACK..? You can't say black, that's not allowed. Don't you know anything?

And MIXED RACE is out, you dolt...it's DUAL HERITAGE now, don'cha know?

LEPER is also verboten. I think that's what the bloke meant, but he was wagging a finger that wasn't there.

ACCIDENT BLACK SPOT? No, no, no...Frequent Collision Area is what you need.

Just bloody well sort yourself out, you white bigot.

When I saw that I thought of these definitions -

SEX, what they deliver coal in, in Knightsbridge.

CRÈCHE, a collision of two cars in Knightsbridge.

THAMES, the daily paper read in Knightsbridge.

Hence the alleged incident of the man going into the Knightsbridge council offices and complaining that he wasn't getting enough 'rubbish sex'.

The dog was named after the latin word for 'black'. As others have pointed out, nothing to do with people at all.

In 'Olivers army' the term Elvis Costello uses is 'white ', which is what troops called catholic-Irish.

I am thinking it was named after the acceptable name at the time for a particular race, which in these times is totally unacceptable. Unless of course he just knew some Latin. Anyway a link for info.

died in today's version and was buried at Midnight.

What ever happened to that Dambusters remake film of a few years ago, did it die a death ?

I imagine Peter Jackson gave up as people were more worried about the dog's name being accurate than the actual story.....

It was a co-production with Sir David Frost. Sadly, he died and I think the momentum went out of the project. I'm sure Jackson has it on a back burner somewhere - waiting for the world to stop obsessing about a dog's name.

It was named after a conventional name for a black dog at the time.

Much more sensible times back then...

In order to not offend those who get offended on behalf of others (who call each other s) I have named my dog....Censored.

I get funny looks when I call him in the park.

I was confronted one day by one of those women who get offended on behalf of others and she came to my rescue...

No, no she said, don't allow yourself to be censored, say what you mean, you have rights..

Thank god for that, I said, I think I like you, would you like to come for a walk with me and my ?

And before the progressives start, this story is true. I still have the scars to prove it...nuts

See what I mean.

As long as people think that the only thing that matters about the whole 617 Squadron operation to disrupt industrial production in the Rhur Valley is the name of the squadron leader's dog - there is no chance this film will ever be remade.
