I seem to recall there was a black and white film on a similar theme, but it wasn't shown until the 1980s because it was felt it would cause panic if it had been shown when it was made.
Thatwas: "The War Game", made in 1965.

Watched this as a 12 year old and it scared the crap out of me.

I had nightmares for weeks and was convinced we were going to get nuked.

Still depresses the hell out of me now. The ending is just so grim.
That final scene is a real sting in the tail. You knew the human race was doomed to die out right then.

Threads is available for download on the appropriate sites. "When the wind blows" is a cartoon / animation about an old couple suffering through the days after the bombs have dropped, it makes sobering viewing and is also available. Of course downloading copyrighted material is naughty so don't do it.

Tragically the girl who played the young girl in "Threads" (toward the end) died at a very young age.

Living as a kid during the 80's and not a million miles away from RAF Bentwaters, Woodbridge and Lakenheath probably meant that the first nukes would be targeted at them, which meant that we'd end up fairly well fried.

I also recall during one school day some Eastern Electricity workmen accidentally set off the air raid warning sirens at Ipswich Docks. Being close by we heard them, silence came across the classroom , the history teacher looked perplexed. "What do we do now Sir?" - "Well, probably not worth starting your homework" came the reply.

I downloaded it recently but haven't watched yet. But yeah, Threads is really good. Not entirely sure about the very end, and the regressing to caveman-type stuff...
I found Testament to be a piss weak yawn fest. You can trust the Brits to put ugly people on screen suffering appropriately. That's what this country is renowned for.

Thanks for that! I was feeling reasonably okay, but now I've watched that I think I'll just go outside and die... frown

I didn't know who made the film and suspected CND or the like. The BBC credits showed that I wasn't far wrong.

I can relate to that - I grew up with Coltishall a few miles one way and Neatishead a few miles in another direction. Oh, and the main offshore natural gas refinery a few miles in another direction. Any of the protection measures in government guidance seemed a bit of a waste of time.

My parents left us at home and my sister (13) let me and my brother watch it (9 years old) , we were both in tears thinking nuclear war was about to start next week.

Still not sure i could stand watching it again, even now (41)

Two years ago we went to the Secret Nuclear Bunker in Cheshire, which inspired me to watch it again (its on YouTube ) . I have to say it's still worth watching today and is a sobering experience.

Some years ago in Edinburgh (late 80s?) I was woken up by what sounded like an air-raid siren. I rolled over and went back to sleep; if the big one was kicking off, I didn't really want to know.

Read "On The Beach" by Nevil Shute. That should just tip you over the edge.

OT, but that's well worth a visit. The big wall displays where they would have plotted the impacts are pretty sobering.

I agree, it is excellent. The film isn't bad either.

I read somewhere that "The Day After" was a bit less bleak because the US Government wanted people to believe a Nuclear War was not only surviveable but life after would be achievable (don't know how true that is).

Threads on the other hand was just thoroughly grim.

Maybe he means 'The Day After?'

Equally as terrifying as Threads imho
Ah, think that was the one.
