Two people know the results before the winners are announced, and they both work for PWC and are appointed to collate all of the results; they get a team to help them but the team only get a small portion of the votes to count each so only these 2 people know the actual results. So says the BBC news article I read last week.

As such, there are also 2 of each envelope printed, and the two people hand them to the "presenters" as they go on stage. Clearly, the most logical explanation if Warren Beatty is to be believed is just that he was given the wrong envelope, even though Emma Stone had already won her award there was still the "spare" envelope with her name on that was given out by mistake.
Yep, the two PWC peeps are on either side of the stage, both have one full set of envelopes each. Presumably as presenters come out from alternate sides the other PWC person should then discard their 'spare' envelope before the next award.

There are some very clear photos showing Warren Beatty holding the envelope with 'Leading Actress' printed on it (although that's only printed on the opposite side to the opening, so he won't have seen it).

I guess the most surprising thing is that nobody actually did anything about it in the lengthy period between the winner being announced and the 3 La La Land producers getting well into their speeches. I'm guessing, possibly, that the PWC people intentionally had no direct link to the show producers, so it took a while for them to flag it up to anyone willing to run out on stage.

I enjoyed the Kimmel / Damon banter, and the tour bus!

Disappointed (but not surprised) Hacksaw Ridge didn't win best picture.
Missed opportunity for Kimmell to blame the Best Picture thing on Damon hehe

Amy Adams should have gotten a nomination for Arrival IMO.
But then how would they have fitted Meryl in?

More like Brokeback Trainspotting isn't it? wink

Cock up at Oscars was dreadful, but headline news? Don't think so!

I watched it live and thought it was a shame because the show as a whole was entertaining. You could see Warren Beatty knew something was wrong but he froze, then Faye Dunaway got impatient and called it. She was nowhere to be seen when they had to correct it.

Kimmel did a great job - "I want to say thank you to President Trump. I mean remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist...? It has been an amazing year. Black people saved NASA and white people saved jazz. That’s what you call progress"

I've been catching up on previous Kimmel/Damon spats on YouTube and some of them are hilarious.
How come Beatty knew something was wrong? The organisers go to some lengths to advise us all that only 2 people at the accountants are privy to the results. Why would Beatty feel there was a problem? The name he had on the card in his hand said La La Land and surely that was a viable winner? So why did he feel edgy? All of it points towards the results not being as secret as they make out.

Do these awards really reflect what the paying public actually think of their films?
no thank god, I don't want Transformers (or other popular crap) winning an Oscar. Oscars is a critics award so hopefully gives a boost to best films and performances (which may be small). Although it could be less elitist by having a best comedy film award for example.

Unusual in that a lot of winners are very recent so may not be widely known - saw Manchester by the Sea and thought Affleck was superb so no surprise there, but Moonlight and Fences only out this week in UK. Off to watch Moonlight tomorrow but has had universal critical acclaim - great to see a smaller indie film win

He was given the just used card for best actress and it said 'Emma Stone - La La Land'. He wasn't sure what it meant so showed it to his co host who simply blurred out the LaLaLand part.

I presume the eventual correct card which was produced was his co-hosts one. I understand they are both given one each but he got the wrong one.

Who the la la land lot? I take it you didn't like the film?
Aye, it seems unduly harsh. I thought La La Land was fantastic, and whilst I can see why people might not enjoy it, it's quite hard to argue that it's a bad film. The cinematography was brilliant in it.

Chazelle is a superb director and Whiplash was an absolutely staggering debut for someone so young. I wish I was as much of a 'wker'.

There are two cards printed for each award, one is a spare. The card he was given said "Emma Stone - La La Land" and was the spare for her Oscar earlier in the evening, they got mixed up. Beatty must have been wondering why her name was on the card.
Thanks. All makes sense now. I was only getting info from TV news, which yet again failed to tell us everything in an attempt to sensationalise.

It also had the category on the card, which was clearly wrong.

I haven't seen lala land & have no wish to - can't stand musicals. The 'wkers' reference was intended for the industry awards crap in general. Backslapping hypocritical bunch of millionaires the lot of them. Don't get me wrong - credit where its due & good luck to someone making a huge amount of $$$$. Its the self-congratulation thing I detest.

Nearly every industry in the world has awards for excellence. This one just happens to be televised and includes people everyone knows because everyone watches films...

There is an annual award ceremony for accountants.

I wonder why the media never covers that?
