BBC Top Gear 2017 Thread

Like the subtle references every week to MLB's love of excavation machinery (watching a video in the limo). I'm sure when he was interviewed on old (new) top gear he mentioned he has a field full of them and goes out and plays digging for fun.
I've got to admit i'm a fan of MLB, love Episodes and like his laid back "If this all turns to crap, I was paid 1 million dollars an episode for Friends so don't care, along for the ride to have fun" attitude, Chris and Rory can come across a bit too try hard sometimes, but Chris is relaxing more into the roll and is perhaps feeding from Mat, they do appear to genuinely be having fun.

Twingo GT review was OK until they got into the Pacman thing and then it was a waste of 10 minutes.
Agree with this, I was thinking finally Rory is doing an interesting article and then it went to st. I actually quite like the Smart too, why not do something interesting with it instead of that stupid game. And please stop pranging brand new cars. But those companies were probably throwing cars at Top Gear even if they were going to end up totalled. That much of a review for one £14k car is the bargain of the century for Renault.
As said above, lighter damage to the manufacturer's press fleet is a small price to pay for the exposure.

Surely in Dubai they could have found a Veyron to drag race the Chiron against? Would have put the performance into perspective.
But as they explained in the show, VW won't let them because the car isn't finished yet. The manufacturers are quite prescriptive in what they will let a TV presenter do with their multi-million pound pieces of kit. Just like the 3-way review in TGT of the LaFerrari/P1/918. And just like in old TG where none of those 3 would agree to let them be compared at that time. Shakermaker said:

Has anyone got the overnight numbers for yesterdaay's show? I'm sorry, I don't know where to find them.
I posted them on the previous page2.3m so down again (100k)
The overseas figures are more important, but I've not seen anything official about those since the first reboot.
It killed an hour on an otherwise dull Sunday evening.
Sabine was far too loud, also I don't know why they kept her swearing (beeped) in the edit? Felt as though they just did it on purpose to add a bit of 'edge' but just felt awkward to me. The PacMan piece was just not my cup of tea.
Chiron piece was watchable.
I did like the race with the three superminis around the track, they should do that more often, good to see some actual racing (I know it's a figure of 8 so their options are very limited)

When the cars are properly beaten up by TG (much more so than this week's show) they tend to be pre-production and destined for the crusher. Manufacturer phones up, asks if the show fancies doing something fun with one, and you get a feature like the Fiesta Clarkson took to a military beach landing, or the Twingo launched into the sea.
As said above, lighter damage to the manufacturer's press fleet is a small price to pay for the exposure.
Dunno about all the instances, but the Fiesta on the beach used several vehicles to cut between scenes. They prepped one Fiesta for the dunking several weeks/months before filming, then had to build another one as they used a different colour one for the non-beach scenes and needed the continuity. As said above, lighter damage to the manufacturer's press fleet is a small price to pay for the exposure.

Disappointed with the Chiron review, driving it up and down a runway didn't give any indication of the ability of the car. Should have put it next to a boggo supercar and perhaps a quick road car to see comparative performance. 6/10
I thought the runway got exactly to the ability of the car- top speed and bhp bragging rights. They said they couldn't put it round the track, so perhaps they weren't allowed to compare it to other cars. FWIW I think it was a really good episode and is now consistently far better than TGT. Sure there are bits I don't particularly like (Sabine, SIARPC is too long esp. when split in two) but if this thread proves anything it will never please everyone all the time.
I'm enjoying this season so far. Absolutely different category without Evans. A few points:
1. Rory seems like a good, yet boring guy. Stop putting him in boring cars. This running joke is already tiresome. I know Chris is the best driver, but I think they should switch it up a bit. I echo the Blue Peter comment above too. Appeal to younger audiences by all means, but not 5 year-olds.
2. Chris and Matt aren't that old. They're cool guys. Stop dressing them like Dads. Bootcut jeans and hiking boots from George at Asda. Not doing them any favours.
3. Celebrity bit isn't too bad. A bit more casual now. Not so much "What was your first car? What are you plugging? How was your lap?" I skipped last week's as I've never heard of that lady. Tinie Tempah was good. For what it's worth, he has the RWD Huracan.
4. Celebrity training. Chris drives 1000bhp cars to the limit, he's done the Nurburgring 24H in the rain. Stop pretending to be scared of someone driving a 200bhp car on a track with 100m of runoff.
5. Cinematography has improved. This is probably more to do with advancements in technology rather than the crew, but I have noticed a decline in over-Instagrammed filters we've seen a lot before. That Aston/Merc piece in Montenegro last week was 10/10.
I've only seen the first couple of GT shows so I can't really compare. I can say that the studio parts of both shows are awful.

As others have said, it's a watchable hour of viewing on a Sunday night.
I've just watched a repeated TG on Dave, it was the one where they all had supercars (Lambo, GT3-RS & May in the stripped out Aston with no air-con) and were trying to find the ultimate driving road through the South Of France, Italy and Switzerland. It was an absolute pleasure to watch it again even if it must be almost 10 years old, I never tire of the cars, the scenery etc. The whole episode was dedicated to the roadtrip apart from a small 5 min SIARPC with Helen Mirren.
The new TG needs an episode like this, no gimmicks, no awkward studio stuff, no 'scripted banter', just the 3 of them in supercars driving through some drop dead gorgeous scenery and letting them get on with it.

Which really would be called "The Grand Tour" no? I don't mean every week. I just feels it needs an 'iconic' episode like this.
yeah you could have that...I certainly wouldn't complain..but even if you had a series where every week it got done... a slower kind of TV where you go for a drive with the presenters... bit like we've had with train journeys and canal trips... just now with gorgeous cars from all eras...
