I'm not convinced that anything Clarkson ever said should be considered 'historic', and to suggest this change is 'editing history' is a little overblown.
Things people ssy in the media are edited all the time, for any number of reasons. I'm all for free speech, but when part of a society, sensibilities often have to be taken into account and, therefore, 'history' is continually being edited.

It's a shame, since we all know George never took himself too seriously and wouldn't have objected,
Not sure about that. When Clarkson reviewed the Jaguar XKR-S he said “It’s very fast and very, very loud. And then in the corners it will get its tail out more readily than George Michael.”George Michael called him a 'pig-ugly, homophobic tt' on Twitter in response.

Not sure we should go back and edit history
Try watching You've Been Framed with the subtitles on. They've taken references to, for example, Amy Winehouse, off the vocal track but not updated the subs...Doofus said:

But the Bolivia special was filmed 8 years ago
And a throw away gag doesn't need to be edited just because the person has died since the repeat was last aired.
Didn't know George didn't like Clarkson via Twitter

Fair point, andd i agree. I do, however, think a lot of what Clarkson says should be editied because it is childish and not very funny. But the Bolivia special was filmed 8 years ago

I stumbled upon an edition of fifth gear the other day, from about 2012,she was testing track cars with Tiff and was exceedingly shouty, screemy and annoying on this too.

I think you're grossly underestimating how irritating she is to look at.She'd be fine if she just quietened it down a bit or a lot.

Clarkson's actual ability to be witty and incisive does seem to have mostly deserted him over the last 5-8 years or so. He's gone the way of so many. Thinking that saying something OTT outlandish is a substitute for actual writing ability. (which he DID used to be very good at) Clarksons occasional tweets just remind me of Bernard Manning shortly before his death still reciting the same gags about "s" and "s" and "Mother-in-Law" thinking he's cutting edge and with it. But the world has moved on.
It's a bit tragic to read the ste Clarkson thinks is "controversial" and funny these days.
"Something" about cyclists
"Something" about the green party
"Something" about Women
I'm not sure how well this bodes for the new series: Top Gear to "Expand the comedy"

If they want to "expand the comedy" then in my mind, they need to learn how to deliver a scripted line as if it is a natural reaction, rather than remembering 4-5 seconds after their cue that they are supposed to say something funny.

If they want to see how not to do comedy they have the new series of Top Gear AMERICA!!!!! as a guide.
Indeed, just watched ep1 and they go as far as admitting they know the show is cringeworthy in the first 90 seconds of the show You'd thing the professional actors (LeBlanc/Dude off prison break) and professional presenters could fake the whole Rapport thing but evidently not. The only ones that manage it seem to be the old gits on the grand tour and Fryburger & Finnegan on roadkill.

I think Roadkill is by far the only consistently entertaining motoring programme about at the moment, been watching it for years think it's really grown, quite addictive and illustrates that you don't have to thrash a hypercar around a track to make for good viewing I just had a look at the BBC article. Oh dear. That's not going to work really, is it.
I had a look at the comments. 270 of them, mostly saying it'll be crap. I particularly liked the first one: "Chris Harris? No thanks."
Sadly the BBC are trying - desperately - to mimic a show that was unique. To achieve their stated goals, they're going to need at least two new presenters, and a whole room full of writers. Who can write something funny.
