More loose ends than an abandoned yarn factory......

I still enjoyed the series though.

Where did the map in his pocket come from? What use would it be on Dartmoor without a compass? Why didn't Kellerman send a reconnaissance plane to look for his car on the journey? How come they didn't encounter any patrols/checks during the journey after London? How did the Yanks get a massive warship up the Channel without the Germans noticing?

Are all Deighton's books like this? I've got his cookbook but it's not a great read.

Dartmoor? He must have been really lost if he was on his way back to London.

Is that how the book ended?

Good series I though, hoping for another as I don't think that one was finished.

Hang on is that it, 5 episodes only?

They could have covered that in a single 2 - 2.5hr TV film and made it faster paced at the same time.

No, the book is completely different and they diverged dramatically. There is so much difference I think its best to read this which is quite accurate rather than me write tonnes of text....

I took it that he was heading for the "unoccupied zone"; so, somewhere oop north. It certainly looked like a peat and gritstone moorland landscape.

Me too. Not too safe for him back home.

Yup, I had assumed that too.

It wasn't really made very clear how far north the Occupied Zone extended, so I had assumed it was probably meant to be the Peak District, or possibly that as far north as Scotland. I can't remember whether it was explained exactly where he was sending his son, other than "north" and out of the Occupied Zone.

It was enjoyable enough, without being spectacular, IMO.

Anyone else wonder whether the producers have left it open for a second series . They veered well away from Deighton's book anyway, so why not?

From what I've read, here and on reviews, it hasn't been that great a series. I watched the first one and didn't think much of it, but kept it on series record. Don't think I'll bother catching up.

My take is that he was making his way to join his lady friend and escape to the US, the only hole in my theory is his son.

Is the book worth a read? Hugely disappointed with the TV effort.

The book is much better but he also leaves lots of stuff unanswered

I'm not sure I agree about "much better". I actually thought it was a pretty decent adaptation - and it stuck reasonably closely to the novel until the final episode.

I'd certainly agree that the book is worth a look if you enjoyed the TV version though.

I've seen episode 1 and not read this thread because of spoilers - is this series worth watching?

Go for it in one hit if you can. Ignore the nerdy historical inaccuracies and if you haven't read the book it won't disappoint as long as you can get on with the sound issues etc
