I moved to Devon 3 months ago and for my sins listen to Radio Devon a fair bit.
What I would like to know is why do they have such a limited song archive. I've heard the same OLD songs time and time again..
Loads of bloody Phil Collins, Dusty Springfield Diana Ross and Pink Floyd.
It happens far too often to be chance. They just don't seem to have access to a very wide library. I know that can't be true! Can it?
I'm even thinking of emailing them , that's an indication of how intrigued I am.

they don't exist to challenge the dominance of Radio 1 or Radio 2, they exist to promote local interest stories; the music is secondary to that. If you want music, you are expected to go to R1, R2 or R3, if you want local news and local information, then choose local station.

I appreciate that, but I don't see why that means the same song/artist constantly.

Ah, but if you listen to Capital or Radio One for example, they seem to have a very narrow playlist too, albeit the latest hits. Capital for example may have several different shows throughout the day, but it's the same songs being repeated every show.

I am told a radio station can rent a package of songs with reduced royalties for a period and are permitted to play them as many times as they like.

how do you think the listeners feel about having to listen to Texas every morning on the Chris Evans breakfast show on Radio 2?

It is the listeners' own fault. Unless they have such low levels of intelligence that they are incapable tuning their radios to another station. In which case they should ask a responsible adult to do it for them.

It's no better if you listen to the 'local' commercial stations.

I listen to 'The Breeze' as their Torquay office is just around the corner (so when they have local DJs on at least they are local to the area).

But the music is dire and, as with Radio Devon, on seemingly continuous repeat (albeit with shuffle on).

Not a lot of options driving to do a job with a standard radio in the car, Heart radio st, Radio 2 untill Ken Bruce comes on is st, Radio 5 st, take the least worse option Of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
Any station that don't play boring Indie music or modern dance music is a bonus.
