Appointment in London. Contains genuine footage of a Bomber Command raid including the recordings of the pathfinder crews. Very harrowing when one of them goes silent.

Mrs Miniver.

Made during the war as propaganda but makes me imagine an England that probably never actually existed.

'The One Who Got Away', Hardy Kruger on the run in the home counties, he turns up at Gerrards Cross station of all places.

Ice Cold In Alex, Dunkirk and The Colditz story all previously mentioned but I could watch all three repeatedly. I'd add 'The Hill' as well, a much overlooked film from '65 with Sean Connery, Ian Hendry, Roy Kinnear, Harry Andrews etc, well worth seeking out.

According to that link the Vicar of Dibley was filmed in the same village. Rather incongruous...

Am I alone in thinking A Canterbury Tale was a load of ****?

I have seen it a few times, and can't see why it is rated so highly.

Plus one for the 'The Cruel Sea'

Denholm Elliot, Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden etc, classic Ealing studios movie based on a book by Nicolas Monsarrat. The novel is better than the film IMO as it's bleaker but still a classic.

49th Parallel- classic propaganda movie by Powell and Pressburger

Laurence Olivier, Raymond Massey and Leslie Howard amongst others. A hard to beat 'let's lick 'em movie' produced at a time when it wasn't clear at all we'd best the Nazis. A fantastic film.
