I could navigate that boat with one eye closed just follow the big white ship with its Nav lights on.

hehe Yep, I did an RYA Day Skipper course years ago, but was much easier to look at other boats movements. I remember some bloke a few years ago got into the news as he was 'self-taught' & used an RAC road atlas to navigate around the UK.... Maybe they use Google Earth these days.

Chris' back story made me think he is a plant.

At one point he was in prison he said? Then he sailed around the country solo. Not saying its not possible and have not seen each episode religiously so i may have missed the detail, but how does a scouse convict end up a reasonably experienced sailor plus boat.

Or how does a someone who grew up around boats and sailing end up in prison (possible but not probably)

I think he ended up in prison due to drugs, I might be wrong but I seem to remember a 6 month stretch being mentioned? I also seem to remember that either inside or just after he came out he discovered sailing and "found his true calling". After that he sold his house and possessions, got a boat and went sailing.

Hmmm....ignoring the prison-based sailing rehabilitation program, that would depend on him having sufficient equity in his house to purchase said boat. So he must have been quite successful in his chosen field before all this

Not sure how old he is, but it wouldn't be hard to have created a small 5 figure sum from selling a house. Online says he also sold his business too.

Companies House states his company was PLATINUM CLAIMS MANAGEMENT LTD and he was the sole director for just 6 months.

This has probably already been mentioned but, Sam Brown (the cameraman), was previously on Bear Gryll's 'The Island'...I was racking my brains a few nights ago about where I'd seen him before.

There was a chap a few years ago who set out to sail around Britain, by 'keeping the land on the right'.

Good plan, except that when he got to the Isle of Sheppey he just kept sailing round and round it, 'keeping the land on his right'.

True story.

Yep I froze the screen and looked at that for a long while. I reckon its a power controller of some sort for the mast light or camera charger. either that or they are cheating big time...

Regarding the earlier comment on transferring positions to charts, in the commercial world the timetable for implementation of ECDIS as the primary method for navigation is ticking with all subject vessel compliance by July 2018. On a vessel with ECDIS as primary and secondary means there will be no paper chart to transfer the positions to. On a ship with paper charts as secondary means it’s unlikely they would as a matter of routine transfer position, under both methods well run ships will have a log of GPS positions anyway so with paper as a secondary means it would be a simple matter to put a cross on the chart if the primary ECDIS failed. With a dual system (ECDIS primary and secondary) the system redundancy should be enough…………. The ship is only supplied with ‘get you home‘ small scale paper charts.

In the waffi world they’ve been happy to sail along fast asleep (single handed long distance ‘sail over steam’ boils my piss) so I can’t see a situation where diligent transferring of position is going to happen, other than on the best run yachts.
Thanks for that bit of info from the commercial world.

Must be me that's just an old fashioned git then. Maybe it's just to make myself feel comfortable, but it certainly seems right to keep steam driven plotting skills current and practiced. Though sometimes worrying how far out a worked up DR position can be. paperbag

Why the fk was he actually there, because in his biography at the start of the series, it said that he's a loner, didn't like taking orders, and didn't get on well with other people. What the fk was he expecting? tt. The sense of relief from the rest of the crew when he left was obvious.

I think the Chris character was put in deliberately. He compared himself to Fletcher Christian once removed which I think was the object of the exercise, however in Bligh’s day he wouldn’t have been tolerated and may well have ended up over the wall. As for sailing single handed around the UK that gets some respect (putting professional concerns about single handed sailing to one side).

As for showing off navigational skills – don’t make me laugh. Even among professional ships’ crew celestial navigation is a dying art, I’m sure Chris would have done the theory (if he has a yachtmaster’s he certainly will have) but putting it into use requires constant practice and the instrument needs to be handled with respect, I dread to think what kind of showing off would have occurred. I have strong views on this as I am probably from the last generation of commercial seafarer who actually used a sextant for real as the primary navigational aid on ocean crossings. GPS was the beginning of the end of true navigation skills and ECDIS (electronic charts) is the final nail in the coffin. We are now getting more groundings due to the incorrect or incompetence in the use of ECDIS than any other cause (rant over). As for being aware that they broke Bligh’s daily distance run record – well excuse me but just how did they know the distance they travelled? Bligh would have used his considerable experience to estimate distance run so the figure was an estimate, but these guys knew to the decimals of miles…how? With no chronometer you cant find longitude and I didn’t see any kind of log being streamed.

On other issues – both Captain and Sailing Master in water at same time… jeez, not a great plan. As for the Doc not swimming, I can fully understand. In all my years at sea drowning never worried me – but being eaten or rather half eaten first did!

Good series, enjoying it.
They probably knew how far they had travelled due to the support boat telling them, there's obviously a boat following them filming and to aid in an emergency. I don't think the show is intended to be a exact fact based replica of the Blithe story or theyd have stuck them in the same clothes etc.

I think it's a bit of an inbetween telling the story and showing how hard it was with a bit of dram but less risk.

Also Bligh had ten extra men in the same space. Imagine ten more people on that boat. There was something like five inches of freeboard. The current boat is roomy and luxurious in comparison.

Ant up to his old tricks, twisting things to suit himself. If anyone thinks Conrad is right AND YOU WANT HIM AS NEW CAPTAIN, put your hands up. Conrad was proposing no such thing. The skipper is a conniving little st.

No he is a strong leader and that's what leaders do.
