Um, ok. And there are several versions of Lynch's Dune, including an extended version that he disowned and is instead credited to Alan Smithee (an official pseudonym used by film directors who wish to disown a project).
What was your point again?
I have the original on laser disc and the DVD with both the David Lynch and Alan Smithee versions, again the latter version was due to studio bosses not understanding that there is more to science fiction than lasers, space battles and exploding death stars. What was your point again?
The Alan Smithee cut has several minutes of spoilers at the beginning that gives half the plot away because people lack either the comprehension skills or won't concentrate enough to discover the plot for themselves.
My point is that the success of Star Wars made it very difficult to make and sell a 'grown up' science fiction film for the next decade at least.
Prior to the 1977 release of Star Wars there was Silent Running (1972) and Logan's Run (1976) , not without their faults granted but thought provoking intelligent films. After the massive box office success of Star Wars the studios didn't want anything that wasn't light sabres to put bums on seats.
I would also point out that Star Wars did spawn intelligent SciFi films. Alien 1979, Bladerunner 1982, Terminator 1984 to name three obvious films, indeed I would argue that those films would not have been made but for the success of Star Wars.
Some nice touches in the new trailer https://youtu.be/n9xhJrPXop4
I find the decision to what looks like my eyes as a direct remake of Lynch's version, an odd one. Whilst I do really like Dune, I acknowledge its fairly derided as not being true to the source material and generally being a mess.
My only thoughts were perhaps to enable a sequel to be filmed, first they had to remake it with a fresh cast. Not sure either way this trailer looks very good.

Villeneuve has categorically stated that he isn't referencing the Lynch movie but working off the source material i.e. the book. There's a good interview from August at the Shanghai Film Festival which is very insightful. Comparisons are obviously going to be made though if you include the hand in box scene and Paul saying.... ' I must not fear, fear is the mindkiller' FWIW I couldn't get along with the book and gave up. Vickers_VC10 said:

Both scenes (IIRC) feature prominently in the book. "Hand in the box" is a major plot point.Vickers_VC10 said:

So you haven't read much of even the first book but you feel qualified to comment on whether the new film is a remake of the old film or whether it is true to the book(s) that you haven't read? As Rumblestripe points out, the Hand in the Box and the Litany Against Fear both feature heavily in the books. And quite early on the first book too.

Hopefully this spurns on other films studios to adapt other Science Fiction books.
Lord Of Light/Ringworld/Planet Of Adventure/Tau Zero and Downbelow Station are some that I would love to see filmed.
Let's see if it delivers first. Dune is an old property and Villeneuve didn't set the box office on fire with Blade Runner. I hope it does well. Sci fi seems pretty fertile on TV anyway. Lord Of Light/Ringworld/Planet Of Adventure/Tau Zero and Downbelow Station are some that I would love to see filmed.

There was rumour this was going to get pushed back. First No Time To Die, and now this.smithyithy said:
It's a very Hollywood trailer.... but I am still cautiously optimistic. It looks like they have captured a lot of key elements. Not least they actually seem to have got Ornithopters correct (something that I suspect was beyond the SFX budget of the David Lynch film)Edited by Clockwork Cupcake on Thursday 22 July 16:39
