Joker

I've seen this twice before but I'm not sure how as the 4k was still in the wrapper so we can't work out how we saw it the second time.....anyway a third viewing for me.

I love this film more and more every time I watch it. My GF summed up her reluctance to love it really well, it's such a bleak story that you feel so bad for Arthur and his life. Except, as I reminded her, the Joker is a psycho and a massive murderer so you're not supposed to feel bad for him! But that's the magic of the film.

An alternative take on the origin of the Joker character, that aside it is a beautifully shot film with such attention to detail. The score is subtle with giant needle drops at the right time, the performances absolutely perfect. I don't hesitate to say that it truly is up there with some of the best films on its own merit, DC subject aside.

There's so much to it that it definitely demands repeat viewings. I love all the little nods to the Batman universe but you could know nothing about that and still love it.

Blows my mind the same guy did The Hangover.

9/10

I saw the trailer for this today and it looked beautiful (the only way to describe it) and so will book tickets to see at my local.

I think you probably saw the trailer for the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. Make sure you see the original before watching the new one.

The scene in Joker in the comedy club is as good as cinema gets. It’s up there with True Romance’s Sicilian scene for me.

No hard feelings, 2023. On the brink of losing her home, Maddie finds an intriguing job listing: helicopter parents looking for someone to bring their introverted 19-year-old son out of his shell before college. She has one summer to make him a man or die trying

Just a bit, 'meh'. Could have been better, funny in parts. Watching Jennifer Lawrence stark bk naked in one scene was rather nice mind.

Dirty Grandpa, 2016. Right before his wedding, an uptight guy is tricked into driving his grandfather, a lecherous former Army Lieutenant Colonel, to Florida for Spring Break.

Just very very average.

Kellys Heros

I'd always thought this was a standard war film but how wrong was I. Slightly silly story line but some of the best lines I've ever heard in a film.

Taking lines/references to characters from the film and sneaking them into the "Knob Head" thread in the lounge has been highly amusing.

Stupid boy!
But how could but I resist, that’s definitely the last one before we get lynched by the knob lot or the mods ban us, not that that worries me, autoste is interesting and not self-righteous and the Chat room in the Members Lounge of the Fortean Forum know how not to take things too seriously

Not yet! When I heard the sequel would be very musically focused I was a bit worried but having rewatched the original I have no doubt it'll be amazing. I'd forgotten how complex and beautiful the original was I think.

The Fabulous Baker Boys (ITV-X)

Although it's 35 years old, I'd never seen it - but have been wanting to watch it since hearing a clip ("Feelings is like Parsley...") on one of these 'guess the year' type radio shows where they mix film/ TV clips between the songs.

I was really looking forward to it. I thought Michelle Pfeiffer was excellent and even did an excellent job on the songs. There were a few great lines in it, and the Bridges brothers were also pretty good.

But overall I found it disappointing. It didn't really seem to go anywhere, and seemed longer than it needed to be.

5/10 for me.

Drive.

I thought I'd seen this before but I had confused it with Place beyond the pines. TBF Ryan Gosling is a stunt driver in both films, Anyway, I liked it, has parallels with No country for old men in the plot & a really strong performance from Albert Brooks as psycopathic gangster Bernie Rose, outshining a few further up the bill imo.

Epic soundtrack too. Drive is one of my absolute favourite films, it is a bit on the 'artsy' side but it's by Nicolas Winding Refn so that's par for the course.

I also really like The Place Beyond The Pines, it might actually be a better film than Drive in terms of story (I liked Bradley Cooper's arc and Ray Liotta plays a brilliant part) and arguably a bit underrated by comparison

A couple from the weekend:

Beverley Hills Cop (1984) on Netflix.

Much-discussed recently on here which reminded me to revisit it. Only the third of Murphy’s films after “48hrs” and “Trading Places” which together make a pretty impressive debut trilogy. It’s a great movie and very funny, I could watch it again and again.
Extra PH bonus points for a DeLorean spotted in one shot outside the bad guy’s house!
9/10

Aliens - The Director’s Cut (1986) on Blu-ray.

Again, so much has been said that there’s little to add.

Apart from a couple of creaky special effects (for example the drop-ship crash where the colours are way off) it still looks fantastic, although I have seen that this depends on which transfer it is, I was watching from the Alien Anthology set. It rattles along with seemingly no let-up, the cast is superb and it is great fun.

9.9/10 (for those effects)

Can't remember PBTP, so that'll be another for me to watch again.

BTW, Drive is on Youtube in full, legit too.

I'd swear most of that drop-ship interior appears in Blade Runner - sans alien, obviously

Drive sits high in my list of favourite films also, probably the most accessible of Refn's films and just such a great film to spend time with on all aspects.

Never thought about the comparison with TPBTP, although I've only seen it the once so need to revisit.

Agree on Brooks, takes a lot to come across as scarier than Ron Perlman.
