That's nothing. One episode I saw of Pointless had 'Pictures of planets from space'. One of the pictures was of Earth.

Here we go I thought, I'm going to see the first ever Pointless question where 100 people get the answer right.

Nope

92

They managed to find 8 mouth-breathers, who didn't know what the planet Earth looked like from space FFS!!
Probably flat earters who have only seen maps and think Earth is rectangular!

Last night , "I literally just told you " quiz show on Channel 4 presented by Jimmy Carr , I really like this , so funny .

Young chap called Sion , pronounced Shaun , at the start he was rubbish ,couldn't get hardly any questions right ,and Jimmy took advantage of that and took the P out of him .
but luckily for him there was 2 other people worse than him and he got to the final against Jasmine , easily the best player of the 4 .

And lo and behold ,he went and won the final and took home £18K .

You can always count on a celebrity edition of a quiz for dumb answers and contestants .
Weakest link last week ,a Love Island former contestant had never heard of Concorde .
At least she still has her looks .

This evening's edition had Charlie Stayt looking panicstricken, trying to remember what former work colleague Steph McGovern's surname is. rofl

Sion is pronounced Siôn, not Sean.

What?

Oh, OK, it's shorn, not shawn (at least it is in the part of Wales where I'm from... can't speak for the North smile).

If she was mid 20s, she would have been 5 when it last flew. So why would she have heard of it? Unfortunately, a sign of getting old is being gobsmacked by young people not having heard of people and stuff that really, given their age, is not surprising.

I was born in 1962. If someone asked me about a famous steam engine or plane that last flew in 1967, I wouldn't have a clue. But someone born in 1942 would be gobsmacked at my stupidity.

I was born in 1958 and by the age of 10 had pretty good general knowledge skills, because the school I went to used to have regular general knowledge quizzes and we were encouraged to use the library. We had a set of encylopedia at home, comprising 8 volumes, which I used to read regularly. I wasn't alive in 1903 but I have heard of the Wright brothers. I wasn't alive 3,000 years ago, but I have heard of Tutankhamun.
I am gobsmacked by the lack of knowledge exhibited by some people, which makes me wonder what they are learning at school.

I think that might be a key difference. I'm about ten years younger than you, but I do recall rainy cold afternoons when I was a kid, desperate for something to do, and ending up reading anything that's lying around no matter how dull it might appear to be. Of course, young people now have the internet, and can look up anything they want, so they don't have that limitation on what to look up - they'll go for something entertaining or funny because they can easily find it. I probably would have done as well, but that isn't what was available to me.

It seems these days they learn about things like grammar that were unfashionable for those of us educated at State Schools in the '80s.

I am excellent at trivia quizes but couldn't tell you the difference between a verb and an adjective.

On a serious note, I wonder how much 'random knowledge' youngsters these days pick up, when I was a kid you had to watch shows like John Craven's Newsround as the only other alternative was to turn off the telly (or watch ITV) so you absorbed a load of current affairs knowledge wether you liked it or not - whereas these days you currate your own viewing from hundreds of TV channels, online content and social media.

I've read your posts, you don't seem a person whose historical knowledge
is from the mid 1960s onwards.

I'd not expect someone of 20 to know about Concorde, I'd also not expect them to
know the lyrics to ABBA and Neil Diamond songs, but they do.

I like to think I have a good knowledge of historical stuff that interests me. Planes and steam engines don't. I couldn't tell The Flying Rocket from Stevenson's Scotsman.

I can understand the lack of historical knowledge about everyday things from folks who were not around at that time. We all have our gaps in knowledge, mine is popular culture. In a quiz in the 80s I once got asked who was George Michael's partner in Wham! Had no clue, to avoid a pass said Walt Disney just to be awkward.

However one thing that does astound me is lack of geographical knowledge by contestants and not just on celebrity versions. Some of the answers on Osman's "Where is Kazakhstan?" round just take the biscuit, particularly when it's UK questions. Or Europe typical answer being "Well I don't know the answer so guessed Paris" and it's revealed they've picked a spot in Poland, just thick.

Most of us have generation knowledge gaps-I was born in 1948 and have fairly good history and political knowledge .
Of course am good on music till about 20 years ago when I fall off a cliff, could not identify a Taylor Swift song, no knowledge of footballers or the like.

Do not have a Facebook,Twitter,Instagram or TikTok presence, do not use WhatsApp.

I may take up Morse Code and smoke signals.

Strangely I have a reasonable response to University Challenge despite the above deficiencies though I cannot match their speed.
