It’s like Dixon of Dock Green meets The Equalizer meets Miami Vice, set in a slum.
Classic! If only we could see that description on IMDb biglaugh

The drama does show a different side of living that most people would never know existed today and the crap police have to deal with.

I think it's brilliant and Freeman is really showing that he has range which has surprised me.

No idea how it compares to 100s of similar things that have been on bbc or itv over the years but I watch it because bilbo is quite good at acting.
Like it so far .

Very surprised at some of the negative comments. I think it is outstanding and way better than the usual sort of Police procedural drama. Fantastic performance by Martin Freeman and in general I think the standard of acting is very high; even the girl playing his daughter is better than you usually find from a child of that age - 8?

It was perfectly understandable.

How do you get on when talking to scousers, geordies, mancs etc?

Up to episode 3 at the moment. Must admit, I'm a bit lost.

I get that the cop appears to be having a mental breakdown but I didn't understand his crisis of conscience when he found the drugs and was contemplating putting them into the evidence locker.

Why not just pass them straight back to his scummy mate Carl?

That would have fixed the damage done by the girl and got things back on track - yes he felt guilty when he realised she was about to be battered but he did her a good turn and got her out of there but she then threw it back in his face by returning to Liverpool. Will stick with it but it's not something I'll revisit.

Having said that, I'm finding the acting quite decent and as others have said, good to see a different side to the main actor.

It has nothing to do with local accents ,poor sound quality ,over loud background effects .AND as I said before ,limited vocabulary exhibited by writer , it now seems that in any drama 50% of the dialogue has to be profane , how long before the C bomb is normal in mainstream drama . Not for me , much better drama available .

Sound quality was fine with UHD engaged and a decent sound system.. I only say this because my dad moaned about overly loud background noise in TV until I made him buy a half decent sound bar which splits the audio up a bit

It wasn't in UHD and anyway that has no bearing on the sound.
Regarding a previous post on accents.
I can understand John Bishop perfectly,I could barely understand a word from the 1st 5 minutes of the 1st episode, hence I switched off.
I have a 5 speaker surround sound system btw.
Everyone's hearing is different, clarity of the spoken word should take precedence over authenticity of accents etc

Nothing wrong with the sound or accents. Obviously if your knowledge of english is the learn english audio classes you may expect everyone to sound like it lol.

How very southern-centric of you rolleyes

And I say that as a southerner.

Is anyone else troubled by Freeman's amplified nasal breathing (especially in the counselling scenes)? It was like finger nails down a blackboard for me. Girlfriend didn't seem troubled though so maybe I'm just weird.

I have no idea what you mean and I say that as someone who's own accent is midway between a Brummie and a Scouser.

We have a perfectly good sound system linked to the tv it has various settings to get the best from all types of programs , there have been a few programs lately where the producers have got the sound balance totally wrong ,there has to be a trade off between authenticity and being able to follow what is going on ,the producers have failed

Now that I have watched all 5 episodes, I felt it actually got better in the latter episodes.

I must be easily pleased, and I dare say having big ears helps, but I thought the sound was fine and really enjoyed it.

Only downside was forgetting how many episodes I'd watched, and having only 1 to end with when I was looking forward to 2.
