I just watched it at home (the opening scene anyways) and it's still good! Not IMAX good obviously but good!

Just bought the TG1 & TG2 bundle on iTunes, they are both in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos - £17.99 which is a very slight saving on buying them separately. Have the TG2 UHD disc on order too.

I posted the link a while ago and, quite honestly, can't be bothered to go back and find it again. But for the original film iirc, because live missile launches are incredibly expensive, the US Navy allowed the producers to film just two actual live launches and filmed them from every angle possible, so a lot of the missile launches seen are just the same two launches but from myriad different angles.

There are some really good YouTube videos on the production aspects of the new film.

I realised on yet another rewatch that Mav had a huge planform shot of the SU-57 - he could have riddled it with the Vulcan with much lower chance of missing, saving both gun ammunition and a missile for the final encounter out to sea.

OTOH, using the burning SU-57 as a flare to distract a heat seeking missile to save your own countermeasures is genius.

Sky want 18 notes for a bog standard HD stream.

Prime says its UHD and HDR but doesn't say if its in Dolby Atmos.

Quite happy to pay the money but want to make sure I get the expected quality.

Saw it the flicks and thought it was brilliant, like films used to be. Watched TG in the afternoon and TGM that evening so you picked up on all the deliberate references with the first. Great stuff.

And was also shown in China & Russia. If you consider that TG:M has made that much money without either of those two markets makes its success even more remarkable.

Turns out if you make a film that respects it’s legacy characters, is well written, has a cast & crew who commit fully to the project and is just designed to entertain people rather than preach a message you can make a ridiculously successful film.

Who knew? hehe

Seen it twice now in iMAX, absolutely loved every minute of it.

I'd have loved it even more if Cougar had made an appearance sweeping the floor in the bar or something.

After many years of waiting (and having the original as my fave 80s film) I finally got to watch top gun last night…

Utter utter crap!! The low level flying scenes were very cool but apart from that it was total dirge, corny, cheesy, terrible acting, plot holes, terrible storyline, terrible script and stealing the f14 was the nail in the coffin!

If it wasn’t for the element of nostalgia this would be a 2 or 3/10.

I passed a similar view and was told I was categorically wrong, that every one of my senses of perception had somehow failed....but I saw what I saw.
The same film, rewritten with every terrible cliche that makes you physically groan and despair at the lack of creativity.
And doesn't every bar owner have a yacht and a 911...
It's also Star Wars...
Luckily, my partner also watched it and independently concluded the same and she's a big fan of the original.

I was surprised at this too - only in HD on Sky and no Atmos. In 4k on Prime but no Atmos. Even the original was upgraded to 4k on Sky.

I went with Apple TV free subscription as they had Atmos and 4k.

Great follow up to the original. Worth the £13.99! And the 2k of Sonos bought to listen to it with biggrin.

Isn't that rather the point?

The difference is that film commits to its own schlock 110%.

I saw it for the first time last night and *loved it.*. Absolutely loved the resolution of the Maverick - Goose relationship. Esp. because I didn't expect that at all, even with a suspiciously well-maintained and unbombed F14.

However, as this the spoilers thread, I feel safe asking... when Mav turned up to the bar in his dress uniform, was he proposing?

Atleast your mrs made it to the end, my mrs is also a massive fan of the original and snoozed off about 40 mins in!

The finale was total nonsense, those missile batteries would have been slammed with stand off missiles from distance, no need for canyon flying and the pair of su57s would have been toasted by masses of f35, the bunker similarly would just get pummelled by some v heavy guided smart bombs.

And weren’t they lucky finding a very serviceable f14 with full tanks and arms ready to go, no need for ground crew either.

Garbage, was like a mix of iron eagle, Independence Day 2 and A team

'Commits to it's own schlock' - very good. Funny, when my wife and I watched TG before going to see TGM we both said how cheesy it was but still good fun. Idem for TGM. No one has to like it of course, but it wasn't supposed to be a Kubrick film with a buried lode message about the duality of man and his place in the universe.
