Netflix Rebel Moon

What an overhyped turd with pantomime villain Ed hamming it up like a Dr Who baddie reject. The roll call captivity scene was absurd, I half expected him to name one of the scorpion captives as biggus dickus.
The part 2 trailer seems to drain any possibility of it being anything more than "hey, we're this massive galactic empire who can't squash a village of farmers. Let's go and fail at combat on a stone bridge over a sodding stream!"

Yes it draws heavily from Seven Samurai as well as lots of other sources.
However, their have been other, much better Seven Samurai inspired stories. Battle Beyond the Stars as mentioned, several Magnificent Seven movies etc but the thing those films actually got right is that each character had enough background story to understand their motivations. In RM they just turn up, watch some weird CGI fight sequence, then ask them to join up to a suicidal mission to which they instantly agree. The only characters motivations I really understood were the Rebel leaders as they had an established stake in the game, the rest I really don't have a clue why they joined up.
Even the main characters motivations I didn't understand, taken as a child and brainwashed to join the conquering army to which she seemed fully committed, so why did she eventually turn? Unless I dozed off and missed it, that was never explained.

Wish I had watched that before watching the first hour of the film itself (and then switching off).As a director of other people's stories, Snyder seems to be good (300, Watchmen, Man of steel) but when he writes scripts... well, he probably just shouldn't.
