Subtitle enthusiasts assemble.

Might a well kick it off myself with Kontroll, a 2003 Hungarian comedy drama set in a fictionalised version of the Budapest metro, focusing in Bulcsu, an eccentric ticket inspector & his amiable colleagues with a love story & possible killer thrown in. Well worth a go, not the deepest film you'll ever see but we can get into existentialism later if this goes anywhere.

'Mesrine' is fantastic, haven't watched it for a couple of years so might dig the dvd out soon. Likewise with 'The Baader Meinhoff Complex', highly recommended and very accurate.

I watched "De Slag om de Schelde" a while back which is a joint British Dutch war film with multiple story lines that gradually come together focused on the fight for the Walcheren islands near Antwerp. Combination of English, Dutch and German https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10521092/
Annoyingly I discovered a local cinema in The Hague shows foreign language films with English subtitles the day after they showed this film so I had to wait a while.

The original Luc Besson/Anne Parillaud "Nikita" is brilliant. The Brigitte Fonda remake "The Assassin" is ok but the original is way better https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100263/

T-34 is good, a bunch of soviet POW's get given a T34 to be used as a training target https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8820590/

Agree with Nikita (still have the VHS but no player hehe ) and Mesrine, both excellent.

Another good French one is Martyrs, a hard watch but blew me away and left me thinking about it for days.

Wasn't Mesrine remade too? I have vague memories of watching what I think was a two part film, one set in France, the other in Canada but I'm a bit hazy on it,

Kontroll is a fun watch! As you say, not the deepest but a good bunch of characters you can warm to and an unlikely setting.

Saw the Belgian black and white flick, Man Bites Dog at the cinema more than 30 years ago, but it seems to have been wiped from history.

Controversial at the time (came out the same time as Reservoir Dogs) and was about a fillm crew following a serial killer around as he killed people. I thought it was pretty funny, as it was actually a dark comedy. hehe

'La Piscine' from 1969 is another favourite, with Alain Delon, Romy Schneider, Jane Birkin and Maurice Ronet, and a rather tasty looking Maserati Ghibli , it was filmed in English and French, with the actors doing every scene twice...

One I remember seeing as a kid when BB2 used to show foreign films late on a Sunday night:

Shouldn't let Timecrimes pass without note, it is indeed excellent.

Welcome to the Sticks (Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis)

A pleasant French comedy, from 2008 if I remember correctly.
Comedy, love story, we found it funny and well worth the sub titles.

I think that is a very under the radar film that more people should see. Warm hearted & a decent recurring gag around a guy from the riviera forced to work in Normandy, who can't understand a word anyone is saying to him.

Run Lola Run, and the Taxi series are a couple of personal favourites.

La Haine, already mentioned, is great plus Spoorloos for its great ending.
