The point wasn't so much about any one show, but about Brewer and his style. He has hosted many different shows on TV, most famously Channel 4's "Driven".

He particularly "endeared" himself to Caterham 7 owners a few years ago by essentially rubbishing the car in a comparison test with the Lotus Elise and MGF.
When he bumped into the Lotus 7 Club contingent at Le Mans the following year, they put him right

Would that be when he squealed like a girl in Arnie's car? Remember chuckling when I read that.

Brewer is incredibly annoying. I'm one of those sad people who hates hearing anyone talking bollox about cars but when its somebody being paid to talk about them on tv...mad

What about the show he does Wheeler Dealers where he buys an old car that is a good example and not some of the rotten heaps about. Chucks it to a mechanic to fix the few little issues, usually a bit of body work and a new alternator etc... then sells it for about 20p more than he bought it for and says its a profit.

I happen to quite enjoy that programme. The idea of buying a cheapish car and doing it up to sell for profite really appeals to me. The whole idea of the show is, you'll be the one doing the work, hence why Ed's time isn't factored into the total cost.

And, if don't like a show, don't bloody watch it!

I am exercising my right as a British Citizen to moan about anything and everything.

But he makes such a tiny amount, it really wouldn't or shouldn't be about profit, it would be for the love of the cars and a hobby, but they go on about profit all the time, not having restored a classic and enjoying it for maybe six months before selling on.

It's the car equivalent of "Cash in the Attic".

The TV companies feel that a programme such as this is not worthwhile making unless there is some sort of financial reward to be had at the end of the project.

It's not really an awful lot different to the "gameshow" mentality.

I so much prefer Mark Evans' series of "A ..... is Born". Reasonably honest and no pretence at any financial payoff at the end.

the question is... are you using that show in any form to further your thoughts - if you are, I'd say it's a great example of why it shouldn't be allowed on air. Follow his methods, and you'll just end up with scraped knuckles and if you are really lucky, the ability to buy a whole real pint in the local with your profit - a pint you'll sorely need if you've followed his methods.

Frankly I don't know how he manages to do so badly, any car I've ever done up purely for profit has made me 20 times what he does!

As it would to any enthusiast however the cars he buys are not cheap cheap and the profit he makes is enought for a packet of cheese and onion walkers and a Half of Lager Shandy

Some shows on discovery turbo are good though, and it had a day of Dream Machines on saturday, and i really liked that show. And it clearly wasnt about profit, as they made huge losses on each of the cars they restored, and it had Mark Evans in it, from the 'A...Is born' series.

But, more on the point, Mike Brewer is an annoying Tcensoredt.

Strange I was thinking the same. I think he went onto greater things when he moved to the BBC like cash in the garden rebuilding auctioning type thing.

hehe I'm sure that meant that they slapped him with their beards, but had I been there and had a beer on, I like to think I'd have gotten to the point and just kicked him square in the nuts.

I'd echo the sentiments expressed in the OP. I've no idea what this gobshite is doing on the box, and I do NOT find him to be a 'likeable cheeky chappy', I find him to be an irritating cock with an annoying face and very little discernable knowledge or enthusiasm for cars.

Has anybody seen the show on Turbo where him and Vicky Butler What's-her-face buy Cat D car's, restore them and then flog them to the public. It took them two half-hour shows to remove and replace the rear quarter from a Vauxhall Zafira and change the back seat's. Then they managed to persuade some poor sod to stretch his budget by £2k to buy it.

Having said that, at least they are not trying to BS us with nonsensical talk of profit, they sell it to the guys at cost price.

Ive seen that show, and they did a VX220 Lightening once and ended up selling it to one of the crew. Also, they never really listen to what the buyer on the show actually wants.

Yeah but the guy who didn't buy it was a plonker as he could of bought it, sold it for more than he payed and bought something else.

Another thing on that show is that they buy some Cat D car for just under the budget then try to get it back on the road for less than a Monkey hoping the mug who they are doing it for will pay the extra.

" That means it's had a really heavy bang and been written off, someone's gone and dug it out from the scrap yard, repaired and re-registered it. It's worth a maximum of the 1500 quid, not the 3 grand advertised". Nothing too serious, but what? who said the car had ever seen a scrap yard? I had a fiesta from new which took a bit of a bang and was cat D, took a new bumper, headlight, wing, and some panel beating professionally to put it back to fords standards. Why on earth would it end up at a scrap yard and not spend a week in a body shop?

But to be fair as far as an insurance company and future buyers are concerned your Fiesta could have been to the scrapyard. It would only be with your knowledge that it hadn't!

It is fair to say that a Cat D write Off would dramatically reduce the value of the car.

Or the guy that wanted a luxury car for £8k.

What did they come up with? A Honda Civic Hybrid. Well, it's got leather seats rolleyes

I'm sure from the blokes reaction he didn't really buy it... Especially for £10k. They bought it for £7.5k or something with suspension damage and front and rear panel damage. And those rear wings aren't bolt on. And being an electric car they had all the structural integrity of yoghurt, so they had to cut the whole wing away! laugh

Twunts!
