The interesting thing I found about the crash investigation was the bulb check after, I saw on a motorway / traffic cops programe years ago in Southampton when a lorry had hit a line of stationary traffic that the bulb in the car proved she had her foot on the brake as the filament had glass stuck to it due to the heat when smashing, this light cluster was not damaged, so it proved nothing,
Why would the cluster on the FTO be damaged? It was a frontal impact on the FTO, a rear-ender on the example used by yourself. He was trying to establish if the FTO driver had been braking at the point of impact, the fact the bulb filament was intact indicated that the brake lights weren`t illuminated, if they were they would`ve been broken as per the car rear ended by the truck.
Interestingly I've also heard of instrument panels being dismantled for a similar check - and also even forensic, microscopic evaluations of the speedo face background. Apparently it can often be seen whereabouts the speedo needle itself was thrown backwards in a frontal accident, impacting upon the speedo face behind it....hence giving a speed at the time of impact.
