Probably wrong of me, but I'd be tempted to select 1st gear, move up to it and hoof the van off the road.

Seems like a plan, push up to one corner & force him off the road. Or take the door off when he'd hopped out.

I'm not sure pouring that red diesel on the road was a good idea.

I'd make a poor police officer, because my gut instinct when dealing with that scum bag from the Jeep just now would be to end societies misery with him and go all Judge Dredd. We just don't need humans like that breathing oxygen. He's scum now and he'll always be scum.

Someone on twitter suggested that the Fudge theft wasn't exactly the crime of the century....

Exactly that.

Hard to justify letting utter scumbags like that continue to walk the streets when there's not a hope in hell that they will ever be a valued member of society.

£60 for trying to steal a van, £100 for a dirty number plate, seems fair

One will pay the fine, and have a little less respect for the police. The other won't pay the fine, and have no change in their respect for the police.

I remarked to Mrs f that if I'd just had to endure the "what's theft?" and "I don't know what a trailer is" bks from the 2 herberts in the back of the van, I'd have been sorely tempted to tell the BiB driving them to the station to really give it 10/10ths. A few miles on the door-handles round some corners, some panic braking and high speed launches over some local speed bumps would be just the ticket for the pissed-up and handcuffed miscreants in the back Like you, I'm far too 'old school' to be a copper!

I admire their cool in those situations, because I know I couldn't maintain any level of civility.

aholes deserve to be treated accordingly, and they are lucky the law and our police are almost all thoroughly professional so they get treated fairly and considerately unless they get violent.

But it's the government's fault for not giving them dole money! How else are they supposed to survive?
