Good films I watched this weekend
Discussion
Tucker: the Man and his Dream. Canvas enough opinion out there for those who've caught this Coppola flick, and quite a few suggest this is Jeff Bridge's best performance. I'm one of those people who'll avoid any commentary or reviews over films I haven't watched until I've watched them, and ever - I think - since I'd seen a precis of it as kid on Barry Norman, I seemed to miss it on the telly or was never available to buy on DVD.
Not a complex structure, merely a glossy and burnished view of Preston Tucker's world during the time he attempted to take on the Big Three with his 'game changing' car design. Heavy on a light, airy score, and a more arty direction style than Coppola is mostly known for. The film, like 'One From the Heart' and 'Gardens of Stone' was a box office flop, apparently a huge emotional setback for the director, which probably resulted in moveigoers receiving such an anodyne Godfather Part III. A great topic, lovely set and setpieces, fabulous acting, but a curious lack of an emotional core. But well worth seeing.

"Skyfall"
Right. I'm not giving away any more of the plot!
It is Awesome....
Craig and Bardem are brilliant. There's some twists, right to the end, to keep you interested. There's typical - and vintage - Bond action. The score is excellent, the direction excellent, casting excellent.
As a Bond film, it really hits the spot. As a film in the wider sense, it's great.
Don't hesitate! 9.5/10
Agreed, absolutely epic bond...really moves the genre on again. After the Bourne films kinda leap frogged Bond this puts Bond back at the front.Right. I'm not giving away any more of the plot!

See it before some idiot spoils the twist at the end for you.

Into The Wild
A based-on-true-life story of a guy who gives away his possessions & savings and goes on a massive adventure - canoeing, living rough, surviving in the Alaskan wilderness...
Found it strangely compelling, initially was worried that it was a bit too introspective but I was won over
Beautifully shot, acted and the original soundtrack by Eddie Vedder is superb.
Perhaps a film to catch when you are in the mood for something more thoughtful - it's not a disposable action movie - it's well worth its lengthy 148 mins.

And speaking of disposable action flicks...
Killer Elite, good watch, 7.5/10
Good cars, good locations.
De niro taking the money in an easy minor role playing second fiddle to Statham is themain dissapointment. He could show more believable emotion in a man then Statham does all movie.
Still a good film and enjoyed more than Expendables 2 or Safe.

Battle: Los Angeles Normally I'd call this a guilty pleasure, but for me that's never fitted with films that take a more serious approach. I've always liked invasion films, but the military's role tends to be seen from the Generals' or outsiders viewpoint. Therefore telling it from the viewpoint of a small squad thrown into the fray against a completely unknown enemy is an interesting one. For the most part it works, thanks to solid cinematography and tight direction. The battle scenes are surprisingly intense, although you are always aware of the 12a/PG-13 rating. The characters are paper thin and the script full of cliches, so I can fully understand why a lot of people dislike this film. For me however it's ideal brain-off entertainment when you just want to watch stuff blow up.

The Machinist - Very dark, intense. Christian Bale is superb in it. 7/10
21 - about a group of students who learn to count cards and head to Vegas. I actually really enjoyed it. Good twist in it 6.5/10
Taken 2 - not sure why it gets all the bad reviews, I thought it was good. Very similar to the first, but still worth seeing 6/10

Having a b movie session.
Hobo with a shotgun. Another grind house spun off. Brilliantly bad, gory but in a silly 80's action movie way. Buckets of blood and violence. some imaginative killing. 7/10 for what it is 4/10 as a movie.
Iron sky - some very dodgy effects aside it generally looks good. The acting is pretty awful in places, especially the main female baddy but some of the pastiche bits are excellent (see downfall). Loved some of the comedy moments, some really yeehaw go good guys bits. Entertaining in a so bad it's good type of way. 7/10

Mirrors. A little horror film from 2008 with Kiefer Sutherland. Not top grade, but not awful. Nice lil story to it, thought it was wk at first but I stuck with it and am glad I did. A few stupid things happen, but a good horror is rare these days.
6½/10.
You might like Insidious. It has a creepy atmosphere and it made me jump a couple of times. Also watched Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter this weekend.Which wasn't as good as I expected the editing is a mess to the point where it can seem like your watching a dodgy dvd copy.6½/10.
