Guns at Batasi (1964)

The East African nation of Batasi is tearing apart at the seams, and a group of British soldiers are caught in the middle. As fighting breaks out between two rival factions in the former British colony, by-the-books Regimental Sgt. Maj. Lauderdale (Richard Attenborough) attempts to preserve peace and order. But his rigid style of command becomes increasingly ill-suited to a volatile political situation in which the stability of the old era has been replaced by violent conflict.

Richard Attenburgh's performance in that film is outstanding smile

I am surprised that Fury has not been mentioned.

The realism of the action seemed as good as Saving Pvt Ryan.

Not technically a "war" film as the fighting is not during a war. But Act of Valor. Someone else recommended it to me on here.

Its a film for when the house is empty and you can watch it full volume. The acting is awful, because most of the cast are not actors, they are real Navy SEALs.

Some of the fight scenes and gun fights are amazing.

Sailor of the King. Watch it with both endings - the happy ending was for the American market.

Excellent film.

Letters from Iwo Jima as directed by Clint Eastwood, absolutely superb!
It’s sister film, Flags of our fathers is less good however.

Hacksaw ridge is very watchable as well.
The bridge at Remegan is very good, Robert Vaughn in one of his best film roles.

I wasn't a fan at all, the violence is so over the top it becomes almost comical

I've lost count of the number of versions of Apocalypse Now there have been over the years

[ seriously Coppola, stop f***ing around with it, the original cut was best ]

It's probably the best War Movie ever

Weird film. Had no empathy for the bloke and it all seemed a bit 'meh' even given the severity of the real events. Very underwhelming and actually boring.

Agree about it being the best ever war film.

Saw the Redux version at a packed cinema years ago and remember the sense at the end of it, the whole audience were silent and shellshocked.

Incredible film.

Channel 5 were showing various war films yesterday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the start of WW2.
I thought it was "over" too but its actually "Bridge on the River Kwai". Irrespective, its a great film.
