Brotherhood - A Korean subtitled film that puts most hollywood films to shame.

My favourites:

Band of Brothers (yes I know it's TV, but better than most films)
Platoon
Black Hawk Down
Born on the Fourth of July
Causalties of War
Charlie Wilsons War
Lord of War
Starship Troopers
Black Hawk Down
Saving Private Ryan
The World at War (again not a film but it is frankly a 'must watch' landmark series)
Full Metal Jacket

I did not rate:
Flags of our fathers
Thin Red Line
Jarhead
Saints and Soliders

'Letters from Iwo Jima' was brilliant I thought (whereas I found 'Flags of our Fathers' weak by comparison.)

'Joyeux Noel' and Kubricks 'Paths of Glory' are two excellent WW I movies

was I the only one who thought 'Valkyrie' was really disappointing - too Hollywoodised with an unconvincing Cruise with a yank accent and in conveniently ignoring the fact that Von Stauffenberg was just as anti-semitic as the next Nazi ?

I would agree with all the films (and TV programmes as well) listed above with the exception of "Kelly's Heroes" - which has f'all to do with war - especially WW2.

I also don't rate "Where Eagle's Dare" as a proper "war" movie.

Not seen in the lists above was "Memphis Belle" which is not that bad at all.

i thought it was good despite being cruise/hollywood.

the jewish thing was an aside for VS anyway, his motives were a dislike for nazi policy, hitler, and the supression of religion. the only real liberty the film took was suggesting valkyrie was more succesful than it actually was. i enjoyed it.

ETA - how many swastika's in the government quarter?! imagine being a native berliner and walking into that of a morning!

my faves:

kelly's heroes [loved this as a kid]
black hawk down
full metal jacket
zwartboek
the good german
assembly
the pianist
zulu
the killing fields
dr strangelove
the hunt for red october
empire of the sun
last of the mohicans
apocolypse now [though NOT the redux]
the dirty dozen
the african queen
a bridge too far
catch 22
the cruel sea
the great escape
the dambusters
hell in the pacific
days of glory
schindler's list
life is beautiful
tora!tora!tora!

Yes, but I don't have a massive beard. Ergo it was good entertainment while the wife painted her nails.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

M*A*S*H

I thought Windtalkers was OK, but then my expectations were quite low beforehand so I was easily pleased.
