Event Horizon does have its moments - had to peel the missus off the ceiling a few times (I'd already seen it and knew the jumpy bits were coming).

When I was a kid, the two that petrified me was The Amityville Horror and An American Werewolf in London.

When I was a kid the two films that scared the crap out of me were Alien and Jaws and perhaps Salems Lot.

I can honestly say I've not been scared by a movie since.

Ghoolies
Night Shivers
The Brood
The Grudge
Poltergeist
Friday 13th (original Mike Myers)
Evil Dead
Michael Myers is Halloween, and the original is a good scare imo.

Interested to see Event Horizon mentioned here a few times, I thought it was a disturbing film and on my list of good films, but it seemed to be panned generally and I don't know anyone (apart from you guys) who find it scary/disturbing etc.

May I add;

Old Boy

Also, saw Chris Cunningham's AV set at The Big Chill Festival last weekend, not seen anything that disturbing EVER. Not really a film, more a series of images. Chris Cunningham AKA chap who did Aphex Twins "Window Licker" - youtube it, but also the Playstation ad with that weird girl.

I'd have to say Event Horizon too, it took me along time to watch it all the way through.

When I was a kid, People Under the Stairs was one everyone talked about - I've still to watch it!

On the subject of Aphex Twin and fked up music videos, try Squarepusher, Come on my selector.

Im sad to say Ive never ever seen a film that has scared me. Every time I watch another one thats supposed to be the "scariest movie ever" Im left sadly disappointed.

The ONLY thing that ever scared me was a program on TV on halloween years ago when I was a kid called Ghost Watch or something? It was a "live" show in a haunted house and they were seeing all sorts of crazy stuff going on. I didnt know it was a windup and believed it was real and it scared the crap out of me at the time.

Oh and the original Incredible Hulk from the 80s used to scare the hell out of me as a kid to the extent I used to hide behind the sofa! lol
I really hope one day someone will make a PROPER scary movie.

I think that's why Blair Witch scared me so much. I remember the furore around the trailers that came out and the early internet rumours that it was 'real' footage. I downloaded the US trailer on a slow-ass dialup on real-player, and thinking it was real, watched it in the dark. The scene in the tent scared the be-jesus out of me and when it came to watching the film, my mind told me it was real.
On top of that my mind is very over-active so I tend to 'get into' films very easily.

What gets under my skin is when it's in the realms of possibility...and the illusion is never taken away 'cos you don't quite get to see what it is... cue Alien. Anyhows:

Like the first half of Jeepers Creepers? It could have been very good but they completely destroyed it with that flying devil-thing.

Speeding truck...? scary

Be-winged 'chakan' character... not scary...

Yes Event Horizon is a spooky one allright!
There's a few bits in The Ring, especially the grainy film of the spectre climbing out of the well.

House on Haunted Hill, even though it is quite funny, has some scary parts such as the evil doctor with the surgical knife.

Does anyone remember Lady In White? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM9pIeZSy5Q&fea... That one still spooks me out!

Aye, I saw Jeepers Creepers with a weapons grade hangover so was somewhat mentally impaired and nearly stained the seats in the cinema.
Just watched "Hit and Run" tonight and it's fairly similar.

Scream and Wolf Creek are probably worth a mention for modern films.
Vacancy and Restraint are pretty tense too.

You have to be at least 30, and be able to remember the Cold War for this one - Threads.

You can keep your gore fests, your scary monsters, your jumpy moments etc. This is the only film that properly scared me.

I remember "Threads", so much scarier than the American "The Day After".

It has been years since I watched it but "Pet Semetary" was frightening yet very sad. An unusual mixture of emotions.

At last! The Omen properly does horror - lots of suspense, the right music, the right atmosphere. It's as much what you don't see as what you do that scares you, something that rubbish like Hostel would never understand. If all you want is a splatfest, go visit your local abbatoir.

Oh, The Omen - the original, not the cringeworthy remake, with one of the most wooden performances ever from the guy portraying the Gregory Peck character. And as for Damien - very unnerving in the first film, just a brat in need of a slap in the remake.
