Quite liked the "come on, kill me, I'm here!" homage to Arnie near the end, although Arnie's was better.
And the tree trunk trap and the mud and er.... there was quite a lot actually.Of course it won't be as good as the original because we have seen the original and we know what to expect.

Laurence Fishburn, 10 seasons on the planet....seemed to be eating alright!!!
Yes, there would have been lots of fresh meat around with 10 seasons of hunting. He would have been like a twig

Hardly a trend - Flash Gordon used to do the same in the 30s.
Quite, I usually like the 'lil films' they make for trailors, fave was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. As for Predators, I loved it, good film. Kept the pace moving at the end, kept you guessing, and liked the homages to the original. The only thing that irked me was how does an IDF operative know aboot a top secret US mission from 1987. She doesn't even look 23...unless it is set in the past, say a few years after 1987, can't quite remember how she phrases it though.
Plus 10 seasons of hunting doesn't mean 10 years as their is no concept of hours/days/years on that planet. The new season of hunting started at the end of the film just as the previous has ended. So in Earth time 10 seasons could have been 10 weeks. He could easily survive for 10 weeks on crap food, Morgan Spurlock did

For one season to start, another first has to end. As the Predators were still on the planet (and still alive about 10 mintutes before) the idea that the parachutes landing was a new season starting is ludicrous. It was just more prey for the Predators on the planet to hunt in the current season.Halb said:

If I remember it right, she said something like "I was briefed on a mission" which could mean it happened years ago.I have to disagree with the negative reviews - I really, really enjoyed it.
For one - dont compare it to the original - thats a classic.
Just take it as a good action film and it ticks the boxes. There were plenty of nods to the original and I thought they did a good job - using some of the original sound effects helped and the cast was very good. Great set pieces, great suspension and some decent one liners. Arnie would be proud IMO.

Finally saw Predators last night. Had avoided it at the cinema as the 1987 original is pretty much my favourite film of all time, so this had a lot to live up to.
It probably helped that I had low expectations, because i was pleasantly suprised and actually quite enjoyed it.
Nothing was ever going to top the original, but this at least doesn't completely trash the series like AvP 1 & 2 did. Its also better than Predator 2 and suceeds at making the Predators a bit scary again. You could shoot holes in the plot and a few bits of dialogue and CGI were clunky, but that goes for plenty of good action films.
So, good but not great. I guess you just can't top the 'epicness' of Arnie and Co.
Most disappointing thing was the character who died first....i won't say as its a spoiler
If i was rating Alien films vs Predator films, i'd put them like this:
1) Predator
2) Aliens
3) Alien
[then a big jump down to the second division...]
4) Predators
5)= Alien 3
5)= Predator 2
7) Alien 4
[then down in the depths of hell....]
8) AvP
9) AvP2
Anyone else agree?

Because everyone who goes to see it has seen the original they all know what a Predator is and what it can do, there's not surprise so the film has to try and do something different. So comparing to the original will never really work.
To be judged it needs to be seen on it's own merits and ideally by someone who has lived in a cave for 22 years and never seen or heard of a Predator in film, tv or game. Which would be impossible, unless you'd like to ask this man about Predators, but you might not get the response you intended

Alien 3 definitely had some of the 'you're being hunted and you are basically fked' edginess of the first film where the Alien could be hiding in any shadow, removing devastating weapons gave it that primal edge, add to that a bunch of guys no one was bothered about saving you knew their chances were slim. Also the acting was of equal quality as the first film, the characters were believable in that scenario, there were little elements like the assistant's nick name "85" due to his IQ and the super intendant using a rubber stress ball which falls from the ceiling as he's grabbed from above. The script was a break away from the Aliens style of macho posturing.
The Alien 3 sets were grimy and industrial, I think it's one of Fincher's best shot films. Aliens is a cracking 'gung-ho' film, the concept design and general look is superb for an action film but it lacked that working class, ordinary man/woman idea from Alien and this theme was picked up again in the third film. I prefer visions of the future in sci-fi that portray the more colorful individuals in society rather than the glossy or well prepared professionals, they are usually more interesting.
On to running film icons such as Predator and Alien - I believe Terminator is far superior and edgy than the later films. IMO they totally lost the plot with T2, where Arnie was essentially only onscreen so they could chuck a few scenes of connor messing about with his 'pet' robot and teaching him early 90's buzz words - the robot from Space Camp was more hardcore.
I haven't seen Predators yet but there were a few scenes that looked like they were filmed on a cheap sound stage rather than in a jungle. Some of the acting looked pretty dire on the mini feature, each character was a typical stereotype although I admit you are not watching a film like this expecting schindler's list.

Yes I agree with all of the above. For me the acting and dialogue was superb in that film. Charles Dance added a touch of class and Brian glover cracked me up every time he was on screen with his little barnsley accented comments "isnt that nice" "how lovely" etc etc I often wondered if he ad libed a fair bit.Alien 3 definitely had some of the 'you're being hunted and you are basically fked' edginess of the first film where the Alien could be hiding in any shadow, removing devastating weapons gave it that primal edge, add to that a bunch of guys no one was bothered about saving you knew their chances were slim. It also has proper swearing in it with wker and arse not the inferior Ass used a lot IIRC
I love this scene just for the way he says "generally unpleasant"
"Let me see if I have this correct, Lieutenant - it's an 8-foot creature of some kind with acid for blood, and it arrived on your spaceship. It kills on sight, and is generally unpleasant"
