OP, sorry if my comments came over negative. Each to their own and if you loved the film then thats cool. I will probably buy it on Blu-Ray as it will be a visually awesome film in high def.
However, I felt the need to say that as much as a visually great film this is, it lacks a lot in other areas. The story has been done a thousand times before and followed the Cameron school of money making to a T. Get the boys in with the guns, get the girls in with the love story. Titanic was a crap film, but was harped on about because of the effects and it catered for both sexes. Sound familiar?
titanic was awesome

just finished avatar on blu-ray

visually stunning but see-through plot, clunky moral messages and usual Cameron cheese-fest with extra cheese, I suspected this would be the case so removed brain before starting and enjoyed the ride

thank god it didn't clear up at the oscars though like that other effects-over-plot film Titanic

Titanic CGI? Seem to remember that most of the ship was real. It's where the money went as they basically built a full size replica. The also shipped in an iceberg from the Artic but had to film those scenes very quickly due to it melting.

We finally watched Avatar last week, after buying the Blu-Ray and DVD combo. We really enjoyed it. (The first film we’ve watched that is noticeably better on BR by a large margin).
However, I watched it again a few days later and found it quite boring and fell asleep. Did the same last night, and fell asleep again.
I think that Cameron's own political ideologies have perhaps stopped this film from being a true classic in future years. Top marks for SFX, but the plot and characters were barely scraping 2-dimensional, making it difficult to feel any kind of empathy for, which is essential.
(Empire Strikes back is still my all time watched flick…I can see Avatar slowly relegated to the back of the DVD cabinet…)

I have seen Avatar so many times now, as the kids keep putting it on and I walk past and then sit down to watch, that I am starting to see lots of continuity mistakes, real and CGI.

Most scenes with Neytiri and Jake have her with beaded bikini style top but all the over the shoulder shots looking at Jake, the top cannot be seen and she appears to be topless.

Jake leaning on the 3D display table with his hands and I am admiring his Casio G Shock (Nice to see that they are still around in 2154) then scene cuts to an over the shoulder of Jake and his arms are by his side.

Seems strange to have spent so much yet let these mistakes go.

I got to see it on a long haul flight. Yes, a whole six inches of screen!

The only thing going for it is clearly the visuals.

Probably makes me a mindless moron, but it's one of the best films ever for me. Especially on a big screen in 3D. The designs, critters, aircraft, robot thingies.,, all awesome!

If only that was there when I had a trip to the workshop. They still had the avatar pod thing, but we weren't allowed in it. But I got to pick up Hellboys gun and see an insanely life like Sam Neil doll.

Still the only film I've seen that was actually better in 3D than 2D.
