Thought it started okay, lost its way in second half, too unbelievable, too many rushed and unecessary parts added, believable villian became unbelievable.

Shame, premise was okay, just poorly executed in the main.

A decent director would have seen it through imo.
My thoughts exactly, I was all for switching off about 3/4 of the way through because it was just getting ridiculous. I was out voted by her indoors who then had nightmares about it last night!

The ideas in it were ridiculous, but as a piece of drama it was compelling, and powerful in places. Glad we watched it, the series was kind of already stretched out by S4 and S5 though.

But is it right that they drove to Dover to get a passenger ferry to Norway, which you can't do, and that they arrived there still within the hours of darkness, so covering an absolute minimum of 500 miles in probably 8 hours, so a boat that travels at around 60mph? That if anything tells you how bothered the writers were about any kind of realism.

If they had reduced the number of “totally bonkers” bits, it would have been very good.

I finally watched this at the weekend, after seeing the reviews I parked it for a while to watch it when I wasn't so excited to temper the disappointment a bit....I was going to write a detailed review but when I attempted it I just ranted for too long on the number of plot holes so concise thoughts below......

It was not a good film. At all. I cannot believe the story came from the same person who wrote the series. Plot holes so big you could drive Luther Volvo sideways through them. Locations that made no sense, even the London ones. Glaring errors in the most basic facts (an ex police officer being sent to prison with regular crims? Really?). Everyone was underused, Serkis would have been a great villain if he'd been given a decent character and not the discount version of Hostel's plot he was asked to portray. Idris was diluted to just running around getting seven shades knocked out of him. No intelligent coppering. No funny one-liners.

The only redeeming aspect for me was the end. It really left me feeling like the whole film from start to finish was a tool to get him to the position where he's now working for MI5/MI6 whatever that was at the end. Because if Idris isn't going to be cast as the next Bond then they'll just do it themselves (could have played the Bond theme at the end as he's walking to the car and it would have saved the whole film lol). And I'm here for that to be honest, but they need to scale the story back for it to work. The format doesn't lend itself to international crime. The show has always been about Luther dealing with the nastiest of criminals who are intelligent enough to beat regular policing and need someone who'll break the rules and go the extra mile to bring them to justice. So him outside the constraints of regular policing makes it a little more believable he carries on as is without consequence.

What even the bits where he gets shot in the shoulder and shrugs it off, or gets drowned in freezing water but recovers due to the application of a blanket, which is soon discarded leaving him in sodden frozen clothing (and a gunshot wound) to stroll off?

No not those bits, I mean literally the last 30 seconds rofl

Apart from being shot/drowned he was also stabbed twice I think pretty badly at that point as well wasn't he. I screamed at the TV when he got OUT of the ambulance and they cuffed him! As if anyone is getting taken to custody with holes in them.

Even more ridiculous than the series, but still enjoyed it. Idris was born to play the role.
