Excellent finish to the season.
But can people that have read the book hide comments using the spoiler.

It was mentioned before that Debra knew about his brother in the book so it kind of diminishes the surprise factor, can you make sure that you don't reveal things like this without hiding the comment under the spoiler thingy, although I should know better as the tittle of the thread does warn people.

The series doesn't follow the books at all though. Deb knows that Dex is a serial killer really early on in the books, apparently.

Sorry if I spoiled it for you, but the books are so very very different that you could read them and not get the show spoiled. Batista isn't even in homicide and doesn't get developed as a character at all, for example. And Dexter doesn't like blood in the books.

I'll put this in spoiler tags, but it's so ridiculous that it won't appear in the show.

In the books Dexters dark passenger is an actual daemon... Yep. Lol

Haven't they got rid of that with the last book (two books?) since then? The magic thing seems to have more or less died out, and IIRC Dexter had a monologue where he explained it away as being psychological rather than real.

Spoiler for latest book though: Killing the bad guy with a giant man-eating shark is pretty ridiculous too!

Apologies to those who were spoiled by mention of the books - I figured that as this is a discussion of the TV series, and they don't follow plots (as above), it would be reasonable to bring it up.

In hindsight, it WAS a bit daft to do that at the church where she knew he'd be, and merely hoping she just wouldn't show up.
It does fit though rather than being an example of bad writing (of which this season had numerous) examples).

A theme developing in Dexter has been his growing over-confidence and lack of care. This has caused him to kill an innocent man, cost him his wife an nearly cost him his son.

After all why are most serial killers eventually caught.

Indeed - he has become sloppy in recent years, and that's the only reason that he gets into the situations. The first couple of series he was meticulous.

The books' quality is as hit and miss as the TV show. The best thing about the books is Doakes is still alive but a cyborg!. The books took too much of a supernatural turn for my liking but this was toned down in the last one.

Anyhow my thoughts on the season as a whole, sadly it continued the rather low quality of S5 and didn’t reach the highs of S1,S2,S4.

Starting with the Positives
It didn’t hit the reset button at the end of the season, which was so evident in S2,S3 and S5. Some new characters introduced are still there and of course it ended on a massive cliff-hanger.

They showed Dexter actually doing his job again, that was something sadly lacking in S4 & S5, but was a large part of earlier seasons.

The season had its moments, such as how freaky the kills were, Dexter is not CSI, so it was good to see them push the boundaries a bit. The road trip episode had potential in this regard but was over far too quickly and was hamstrung by their unwillingness to ever make Dexter the bad guy.

Negatives
As it has been for a number of seasons now the voiceover was very banal at times.

Too many crucial scenes felt far too rushed, in particular much of Eps11
I didn’t really buy Debra as Lieutenant, she had probably earned promotion to Sergeant but that seemed very far fetched.

A very telegraphed twist, with a poorly handled reveal, most of us have seen fight club and I would have been amazed if Gellar was real by that point.

Personally I thought it was the second best to season 1 and perhaps season 4.

I am glad his kids are gone and its a shame the baddie didn't off the last remaning one as far as I am concerned.

I did liek the gellar twist, would have hated it in a normal film but given how dexter has a ghost in his head it was a good little twist that i didnt see coming.

Think they may have ruined the dexter/debra dynamic for a suspensful ending though

cant wait for the next season, lol

I guess I had better pull my finger out and watch the remaining 9 episodes of series 5 which have been sitting on the Sky+ box since they were broadcast last year!

Looks like I will be ringing Virgin in the morning and reordering FX package again. I only ever have it for the series and then bin the package again. I wonder how many others do the same?!..
