His writing also includes a few episodes of Doctor Who.

Yes I enjoyed both of those. Love the League, that was long ago now, and in conjunction with others.
I want GRR Martin to write Sherlock. biggrin
hehe

Did the other writer, Moffat, write the Dr Who spinoff Torchwood, too?

I loved the first series, but, like Sherlock, the latter series' ended up way too camp and self-indulgent, and ultimately less enjoyable. (I don't watch Dr Who, so can't comment on that)

Well, I really enjoyed it. Admittedly, I'm sad it wasn't "proper" Sherlock and it's gone a bit weird. I mean, how many "unique" children can one set of parents produce? The CGI for the Baker Street explosion was horrendous and you could drive a bus through some of the plotholes. (Dropping a rope down a well makes chains evaporate!) But the tension was maintained throughout and Sian Brooke made a cracking villainess.

But the advantage now is that should Moffatt and Gatiss decide to write a fifth series, Mary has now been offed and things can get back to normal (although they'll have to park Rosie with someone otherwise they'll never get any work done). The whole thing started to wobble on its axis when they introduced Mary at the start of series 3. But series 4 was terribly farfetched throughout, and the second episode had me thinking "WTF?" right the way through until the last 10 minutes or so.

That said, I've watched the second episode again since and it's a lot better second time round. Still weird, but better. Toby Jones - again, a superb choice of villain.

So. If Moffatt and Gatiss can just park their egos for five minutes, leave out all references to Moriarty, Euros and Mary and just get back to Sherlock and Watson, with Lestrade and a bit of Mycroft, Molly and Mrs Hudson thrown in, they could certainly write more Sherlocks and I for one would be happy to watch. Although there was no cliffhanger ending last night, which makes me think we may have seen the last of our hero and his hat. frown

I'm doubtful of that, unfortunately.

Sums it up for me about the writers and what they did to Dr. Who (aparently, ive never watched it) and now Sherlock;

They've got form — making Doctor Who all but unwatchable. In their hands, a cult children's show was turned into an in-joke for the kind of people who think they are too bright to watch TV.
Couldn't agree more!

He was but they even tried to f'k that up. What kind of villain makes a stupid random non-confession to his Board of Directors and then hooks them up to IV drips so that they'll forget the confession. Why not simply "not confess"?

Too far up it's own arrse for its own good.

And the 3 Garrideb brothers all working in the same high security prison?? Gibbering b0110x.

Was just watching the final one - we've switched off when they dangled the three blokes outside the window.

I don't care how it ends - absolute tosh.

Also pleased to see that others here agree with me - I said to the wife that it's turning into a st version of The Crystal Maze.

Also, funny how Mycroft was always the best of them all yet when 'Mycroft' actually gets to write his own bit, he fks it up royally.

There was no plane.

If there was, plummetting into Sherrinford after 20 minutes would have brought about a much needed end to the sorry saga.

Awesome all 3 episodes, last episode should have been at least an hour longer or a 2 part'r to get through all the subject matter and theme's.

Totally agree with other posters that it was like some sort of overly complicated and strange acid trip written by people who have all but disappeared up their own arses.

That said, I did thoroughly enjoy it again (other than the monologue at the end which was too much even for me).

Could well be the last we'll see of them though, which makes me a bit sad TBH.

I thought the episode where they offed Mary was pretty good, the Culverton Smith one was spot on in many ways (not all was good / perfect) but last night was just utterly shambolic, self indulgent twaddle.

I was expecting a shark in a tank and Sherlock to have to clear it in a single bound so they could do a post-modern, ironic nod to jumping the shark. but no, it was worse. And the ending was utter mawkish ste

Big fan of Sherlock with MiniMadness an even bigger fan.

This series started ok, got better with Toby Jones but last night was a bit too much Saw, Crystal Maze navel gazing for me.

Long running series always used to get comments about always sorting out the problem/case/space time continium in one episode with no real long term consequences. When some series started to include a bit more of an arc over the series I jumped back on and looked forward to how it was all tied up. Now I do realise that finishing a series on a cliffhangar and then eventually wrapping it up cannot be done easily and however its done you get some differing reactions (Battlestar Galactica, great ending for me but not for a lot of other fans).

However Moffat really seems to be having more and more convoluted plot lines for a series arc, especially in Dr Who and this seems to spread to Sherlock. The first 2 series had the Moriarty arcs but this one just didn't work for me. Attempted to be too clever and asked us to accept too many retcons and jumps in belief. Not one but two hidden siblings which Sherlock cannot remember. To top it all the wrap up was rubbish.

When it was good it was brilliant, when it was bad it was really bad!

Or it could have been just a 30 min program if they'd got rid of all the dross! hehe
