Not a bad effort by the beeb. I actually like the two main actors, although I sometimes struggle to see Freeman outside of the Gareth taunting character of the office & Ali G's sidekick from the Staines Massif.

Gatiss was excellent & co-produced I notice.

Has the mobile phone thing been used like that before? I thought that was quite natty.

I don't think the place used for 221B is actually in Baker Street, most of the real street is 3-lane & 1-way.

One question, would it be possible for a black-cab driver diagnosed with the condition suggested to operate? I know it's only TV, but don't they have to disclose their medical records?

I thought it was pretty good. Probably the best thing Martin Freeman has done for a long while. Looking forward to the next two episodes.

frown I'm really into the 'real' Sherlock Holmes and thought this could be a really good concept... I was disappointed!
I'm a HUGE HUGE Sherlock Holmes fan....

And I thought it was brilliant!

Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Sherlock very well IMO. Freeman as Watson was also very good. I was glad to see Watson given his due credit, and not portrayed as a bumbling idiot as has been done in previous incarnations.

The mannerisms and dialogue used by Cumberbatch was very much in keeping with ACD's original character. His feelings towards the 'lesser' interlects is just how Sherlock would have acted, and the wity comments (Scrubbing the floors, judging by marks on her knees hehe) had me laughing.

I was a little apprehensive when I heard they were doing Sherlock in Modern times...but after watching yesterdays opener, I can honestly say I'm very much looking forward to the next episode.

Loved it, I love the whole power of deduction thing and try to practice it myself, but I'm afraid with little success

It was far better than expected and for that reason I found myself overlooking its weakneses - like the taxi driver plot being a bit daft / not bearing scrutiny.

I do wonder too whether Holmes's stream of consciousness routine is going to wear a bit thin by the end.

Looking forward the next one. Sunday night TV is quite good at the moment; rounds off the weekend nicely.

I enjoyed it, I thought the use of the modern setting was a nice twist.

It certainly looked like it was off the Marylebone Road somewhere...

This is the 'official' 221B Baker Street, just up from where the old Abbey National offices were (and covered something like 219-229). As you can see, it is next to 241. According to Wiki, this is because Shirley Porter decreed it should be so in 1990.

I thought it was good, clearly a rip off of the film mind but that doesnt hurt.

As for the pills, could they have been both the same? due to the medical condition of the taxi driver they wouldnt have the same effect on the taxi driver as on a healthy person.

What a coincidence that the cabbie is the same actor who plays a police officer in Whitechapel.

Seemed ok. Liked the photography for a while although I am NOT a fan of harsh focusing (seems to be the in thing now everything has gone HD). Loved the tilt shift view as well.
The HUD display of thoughts was good - Sure I have seen it before, but still good.

Apart from that Freemans John Watson was very 'likable' and well cast. Also never watched 'The Office' my thoughts were never diluted thinking of his past acting. As for the other chap (sorry, dunno him) I suppose he will grow on me.

Also with CSI this and that with more and more of these detective series it must be getting harder to find that niche.

Hopefully it will grow on me as it was a good first outing to ease us into the characters..

Will wait till next week.

Just to add, that I and hate to say this! I thought to start with it looked just like a more edgy / adult version of Monk.

Sadly, its only 3 episodes long.

Perhaps if the ratings are good it'll be recommissioned.

Thats a shame, has the makings of a great series although I'd worry that would diloute it and the writing would probably suffer too as they try and force a story.

"But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me."

No a clever man puts the poison into both goblets and has already taken the anti-dote, as per the film your quoting, which is what he actually did (the princess bride, someone mentioned it earlier).
