The announcments when he and Baddiel parted ways said a lot
Newman: Parting ways... been good working with him... wish him well etc
Baddiel: What a he is, hope i never see him again etc etc
I often wondered if it was fuelled by Baddiel's long, clever, intellectual based sketches raising a laugh, while Newman doing some water colour paint by numbers had people aching from laughter.
A shame indeed that he's left our screens..... and had a haircut, traitor!

Could be. People of Restricted Seriousness was never funny, Painting by Numbers was briliant though as was Horsey Nana if you remember that....Newman: Parting ways... been good working with him... wish him well etc
