I KNEW there'd be a PH thread about it! I've been watching the repeats too when I get home from work.

It's brilliant! Yup, very cringeworthy (even worst than I remember!) but great fun. I always seem to miss good fights though - I remember it was very tournament based, but now there always seems to be just random fights that they call different names.

Robot Wars was a proper tournament, Robot Wars Extreme (thats showing on Dave) was a bit of a tournament with random bits thrown in like the international fights with the little bit rubbish European and American robots and that belt contest for random grudge matches. The first series (Clarkson presented) was a set of obstacle course type things with a fight as the final. The best time of it for me was probably second or third series, with Phillipa ( cloud9 ) and before Refbot.

Ah right yep, that makes sense. I agree - the 2nd/3rd series would be about it's peak.

I was early teens when it was on, and I remember in our house the final of Robot Wars was an exciting prospect!

As a kid, I always wanted to enter, drawing up terrible examples of robots, I even had the Robot Wars computer games.

The designs I came up with were wedges with every weapon imaginable hehe They'd need to be like a tardis to fit it all in.

Did they not originally have lighter classes?

Just reading through Wikipedia, it seems you're right - the weight limit went up to 100kg so yes, they got heavier.

I'd forgotten about Chaos2 ! He used to flip people out the ring!

Never liked Chaos2, it was good father and son...and then some bloke who drove it. Bit too serious for my liking, I'd rather have seen the kid operate it with his father.

Tornado was my mate's cousin - we spoke to them at his wedding. Nice guys actually! One of the less-geeky teams!

fking awesome!

loved RW growing up as a kid!

Behemoth was one of my faves and panic attack, there was also a red one that was pure pushing power, ran both ways up, had no weapons but moved well...

hypno disc vs razor is showing in one of the episodes on dave at the mo.

I remember the first series, and how surprising Road Block was to everyone.

They came with very elaborate, high, wobbly robots and Road Block simply drove into them, tipping them over. A great idea and paved the future for Robot Wars, SRMECs and flippers.

They had some clever tactics, like fitting a HUGE frame to beat Razers beak. They couldn't fit down the pit thanks to the framework.

Can anyone remember who it was who got out of the pit? Possibly Cassius, I seem to recall a bot flipped out of the pit (although it has already lost IIRC) and attacking the house bots.
