Razor was the daddy, properly elegant design, and virtually unstoppable.
I always thought the problem with all the "pinching" hydraulic robots was how slowly the jaws clamp together, which means your opponent needs to lurk around in the danger area for ages whilst you get your robots jaws shut on them?? I never understood why the builders didn't just use 2 pumps, 1 high pressure to apply the massive crushing force, and 1 high flow (with a one way valve) to quickly snap the jaws shut at the right moment???
It had a ramp below the crusher so they got that in under the robot to lift the wheels up off the ground so it could drive away, then crush it.

Razer vs Tornado (with their extended frame)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDZjUM3INzs
That just reminded me why I really didn't like Tornado.
i thought that there were size limits the bots had to adhere too
it bothered me that tornados extra frame made it over size, would have loved some rule clarification on that when it happened

I rememebr it being controversial but, ultimately, it was allowed. I thought there were weight limits, but didn't realise there were size limits.

Killertron - http://robotwars.wikia.com/wiki/Killertron

Was an early successful robot, despite having a body made from a plastic wheelie bin lid.

I hated when tornado came out with that frame work, it ruined what would have been an interesting final.

no, they were the team that complained when having being clearly immobilised and out of the round, one of the house robots then started to cut thro the very expensive looking body parts..

not quite the same thing, and I don't blame them, given the obvious expense of the robot..

poor sportmanship by the house robots....

but those were the days, and yes.. I've started to watch it again on Dave too smile
Razor got stuck on the sidewalls and couldn't move and Pussycat came in to attack. Damaging the rear of Razor. They fight until cease is called and many robot continue to attack partially or fully mobilised robots (see the Hypnodisc video above).

A lot of that was some very expensive motors or something like that anyway, which they were developing for their PHd work and was probably a theoretical cost rather than a real one. I think it was just willy-waving really.

I very much doubt that amount of real actual cold hard cash was spent.

The Gadget Show, I think in the last series, made a lightweight class robot and they had a few others to show whats possible. There was a miniature version of Razer which was still pretty powerful. The one they made was controlled with a Wii remote.

Although it debuted in Series 1, its best performance was in Series 2, where it came fourth, ironically when it wasn't painted pink
