Finally decided to give the books a try - my theory was there are plenty of good books I have to read, but very little on the TV, so was holding off for the sake of spoilers.
After the first 34% (thanks kindle!) of the first book, I think I made the right choice - it just doesn't seem as good - reads too much like a script for the TV show, rather than a book in its own right - banging on about what people are wearing and what is on their banner seems to be a favorite topic.
Seriously? You are the first person I know who hasnt found the books interesting or better than the TV show (With the obvious exception of book 4, that is boring!)After the first 34% (thanks kindle!) of the first book, I think I made the right choice - it just doesn't seem as good - reads too much like a script for the TV show, rather than a book in its own right - banging on about what people are wearing and what is on their banner seems to be a favorite topic.

Where have I seen Pyp before?
I seem to remember seeing him as a kid in an advert, maybe? It's the wonky mouth.
Peep Show - mugger? He has a muggers face I seem to remember seeing him as a kid in an advert, maybe? It's the wonky mouth.

Must admit that the TV show is brilliant how in a few seconds of footage they capture many many pages of turgid Martin prose.
AFFC is 852 pages long and by god it was dull - the low point of the books...
Why does GRRM have to describe in detail every meal that a character eats? It is one way to slow down the writing process and lengthen the books.
Its as if he has taken this to heart:

Are we to assume that Jesus, throughout his brief life, never had a piss? And if-, if he did have a piss, why wasn't it fking reported? Did he have a crap, why wasn't it down? Why didn't Paul say, "And Jesus went into the temple, had a piss, had a crap, wiped his arse with the money-changers," and, er, put in all the stuff which would make him human instead of all this st about saying, "Take up thy bed and walk," to some ct who's probably perfectly happy begging?

Every detail written down, each bit just a tiny amount - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YlEpI00ouUFourWheelDrift said:

The books provide the background for the show really. The history, particularly that of Robert's rebellion, the customs (why guest right is so important etc). After the first 34% (thanks kindle!) of the first book, I think I made the right choice - it just doesn't seem as good - reads too much like a script for the TV show, rather than a book in its own right - banging on about what people are wearing and what is on their banner seems to be a favorite topic.
I find the first three books well written for the most part and are fast paced for the genre. Though perhaps lacking in parts with character emotions.
In comparison the show can feel a little rushed at times and could have done with 12 episodes some seasons. However they have excelled for the most part in casting and many of the actors are really bringing the characters to life.

I know a continuity announcer (Ch 4) and told her how much we hate that, but they are told to get in quick before people turn off or change channels. It REALLY annoys me... so I told her if I ever heard her do it, I'd let her tyres down.
Doesn't she and her bosses understand that people are irritated by this and rush to change the channel or more likely fast-forward past so they don't get heard?Halb said:
