The Unsullied - been thinking about this, if they are castrated at a young age, how do they develop a mature muscular male physique and why do they not have high pitched voices?
Not sure but isn't it your prostate that produces your male hormones.

No, mostly secreted by the testes.

They would not enter normal puberty. Their voices would not break, and they would not grow facial or body hair. The growth plates of their bones would not fuse when they normally would, so they would be taller than expected and their proportions might be a little odd. They would be likely to develop some breast enlargement. Their cardiovascular systems would not be subnormal, and they would have a tendency to get fat.

So Varis is probably closer to reality.

Aye, to me Varis looks about right from having read other bits about it (wrt Castrati Singers - the use of castrated male singers for singing alto in church choirs during 17th and 18th century Italy)

He doesn't quite sound right, his voice should be higher pitched.

As for the muscles - training, training & more training? Although none of them look that 'bulked' iykwim?

I posted earlier but no one has commented on whether we want to wait till the 9pm showing is over? I don't particularly mind either way but some people will be upset if it's spoilers that Tyrion dies in the 2am showing for example.

Given how few people will be able to stay up until 3am on a Sunday night to watch the simulcast it would seem to be good manners to wait until after the Monday night screening.

There was space when she chained them, looked like they could have slipped them off by being a bad cat to me.

Testosretone is provided by the testes in men (ovaries in women), but that is just one muscle building hormone, there are others. And the Unsullied all seem pretty small.

Which is the opposite effect you would expect - testosterone both starts and ends the adolescent growth spurt, by fusing the growing plates of the long bones. Castration prevents that, which results in them ending up taller than they would otherwise have been. I think the GoT eunuchs have less fat and more muscle definition than would actually be possible. But, on the other hand. Dragons. fking big fire breathing dragons. And animated corpses, murderous shadow babies and oops, was about to mention something that's not happened yet.

I'm not sure. The training from a young age would have an affect. But then of course the peoples of Slaver's Bay don't seem large (the peasant class, similar to Westeros) so it doesn't seem unusual.
Unusual bones of gladiators have been found where the constant training has changed the construction of the skeleton from a 'normal' skeleton. That sort of training from such an age...it's like micro-evolution. biggrin

I didn't think that the flashback scene at the beginning with young Cersei and the witch added much to the story. I wonder if we'll be seeing more flashbacks.

I thought that the World Premiere programme really missed a trick by not having Kristian Nairn answer every question with the word "Hodor".

I did wonder how they managed to swap over the chains. Drug their food I guess. Pretty gutted for Mance but as has been said, it couldn't really go any other way. Only saw the first episode and I must say I love not knowing what's comming.

Will Jon Snow be up for the chop only for the nights watch to revolt? Will the freefolk choose him as leader? Will the red woman burn him at the stake only to find he's totally impervious to fire? *

  • Actually he can't be- didn't he burn himself quite badly saving Mormont from the undead? Did daenerys burn herself on the eggs the first time she cooked them?
I don't want to know the future BTW, just conjecture on what we already have seen.

Conversely, I thought the flashback went some way to explaining why Cersei is a nasty, paranoid, overbearing & overprotective mother.

She must just be waiting for the next ones to drop...

Agreed.

They were hinting on Thronecast afterwards that this was a big season for Cersei, and I think that flashback points at a big storyline between her and Margaery is going to happen.

Involving a shallow empty pool and a large jar of honey.
