To be honest I didn't enjoy the Unsullied vs Sons of the Harpy fight scenes. Grey Worm and Ser Barristan dying would be a bit of a tragedy, but it does set up Jorah, Varys and Tyrion to step in.

Will be interesting to see Baelish back in Kings Landing. I can see some backlash for the goings on at his brothel.
Agreed on the fight scenes, Grey Worm and Barristan were the only ones to put on a fight?

Are these the same Unsullied that just stood there while their nipples were cut off? From what I remember, not one unsullied got a kill 'cept for the ones that were with Grey Worm, and even that scene suggested that Grey Worm stood out massively amongst them.

Oh as for Barristan, I think he did great, about 7 kills before someone got to him? Pretty impressive!

I didn't have a problem with the fight scene at the end. Didn't king joffrey publicly throw him out of the Kings guard for being past his sell by date.
My take on it was, he was the best in his day but was well past his prime.
My take on it is like boxers, it's all talk until the st goes down, and in that capacity, anything can happen. Barry deffo is a badass though, but every dog has it's day, plus in the books he fights with armour. Knights tend to, Ser Friendzone won his fight in series 1 via his armour. If Barry had been armoured, he'd be the last man standing. biggrin

Lets face it, no matter how skilled he is with a sword, he's a bit of a codger getting on a bit. So it's not surprised he was eventually overrun with greater numbers.

I watched Eps 2-4 from the leaked copies a couple of weeks ago and so didn't have the benefit of the "Next Week on...." preview which accompanied last night's showing. I confess, I thought Barristan had been seriously wounded but didn't think he had been killed. I still haven't seen the preview of Ep 5 but I gather that it puts the question rather beyond doubt. Shame - I always liked the Barristan character, in both the books and on TV.

I guess that it conveniently leaves a gap for Tyrion to slide into as her adviser.....

I thought the point was that the unsullied fought as a unit with long spears - so they were lured into a confined area and attacked from all sides, which made it difficult to defend themselves. It was quite clever, really.

It feels like Dany has been nerfed. From all conquering badass to facing open rebellion and not being able to control her own dragons ..

The show isn't doing a particularly good job (or maybe it's doing exactly the job it wants to do) of showing Daenerys to be a capable Queen.

She seems to stumble from one poor, short sighted, emotionally driven decision to the next, even with seasoned people supposedly advising her. There's no nuance in how she deals with matters, it's all just black and white application of arbitrary rules. On the face of it she seems to be the least capable of ruling Westeros. I can't see any way she could practically deal with all the necessary politics to able to keep 7 kingdoms in line.

Even her all conquering Unsullied were shown to be pretty underwhelming fighters in this episode, taken apart by a bunch of masked mooks.

Now Melissandre, that's someone I could get behind lick

I recall the masters saying the unsullied were trained in a few weapons, 2 spears and a short sword wasn't it?

Why on earth are they using spears and not short swords in closer combat?!

None of the new generation have the experience yet - they're getting it, if they survive their mistakes long enough.

It's all down to what they're equipped with. Dani walked out of...Astaphor? With the Unsullied as they were.
And as said, Unsullieds' strength is on the battlefield as a shield wall and as an army that won't ever run. One of Dani's many mistakes is to use them as a police force, a task for which they are ill-equipped...as invading armies find (Iraq, Afghanistan etc).

probably because at the moment they're virtually being police which requires a different mindset... I rather suspect that in the next epi or 2 that mindset will have changed

Presumably they had full equipment for the Unsullied in the city, so had plenty of time to pick it all up before marching out?

I remember the Unsullied were presented to her, and I don't know if they come equipped with sword, they were said to be trained with sword. She flamed the head dhead, asked the Unsullied to follow her and they marched out as the square burned.

At the time I thought it was significant that GreyWorm stopped Sir Barry's throat being cut, seems as though he make make another appearance...even if it is from his deathbed.

Aren't there hundreds of the unsullied in that city?. Why did no-one else come running when the bells rang?.

The Unsullied are in history an equivalent of the Greek Hoplites, they fight in a spear phalanx and they are very good at it. But tightly formed Hoplites only work together in the direction they are facing, they cannot turn very quickly with the long spears. They will always lose if attacked from behind or from the side. I think the Unsullied were only ever bought in small groups to compliment an army of other talents, an Unsullied Army on it's own perhaps doesn't work. There would be skirmishers used on the Hoplite's flanks and behind to stop any shock attacks. (© Total War Rome)

Daenrys has no other type of soldiers, not cavalry, no archers, no skirmishers (apart from the ex-Ser Barry and Ser Friendzone of Coventry)

Just IMHO smile

I forgot about them, haven't seen much of them. Are they all back in Mereen or are some still policing Yunkai and/or Astapor?
