Why would two dragons match the colours of their riders, but not the third? GRRM doesn't do this kind of thing by accident, Rhaegal is green and gold for a reason. Quite what that reason is, is another matter!
Maybe a grey dragon wasn't that interesting getmecoat

On the other hand, yes, Dany is a Targaryen. But what is Tyrion if his father wasn't Tywin?

Why a Tyrell for the last dragon? Which one is an important character just now. Or is there anything other than the colour of the dragon to back that up?

Will - that's a bit out there as a theory, there's been zero hint of any other potential targ bds running around...

Personally cannot see past Dany/Jon/Tyrion as the three heads. Plenty of supporting hints and likely paths.

Anyone thinking that B&W are feeling a little unshackled by the pace of the books? Up until now everything has moved at roughly the pace of the books, now they're ahead the pace seems to have kicked up several notches...

I was amazed when they said they could finish by the end of season 8, now I'm thinking that it's very likely.
I don't see why they would rush it though - HBO are sure to be happy to extend the run of a huge and prestigious moneyspinner for a season or two, if that's what the showrunners wanted to do. It's not like they don't have loads of characters and story threads that they can pursue.

I doubt that they'd be under pressure to finish it quickly unless there are some sort of contractual deadlines (like they lose the rights to make shows from the books after a certain date or something).

No contractual pressure other than needing to renegotiate most/all the actor contracts after season 7 I think.

Anyway I would sooner they had a plan to finish in eight seasons rather than drag this out and follow all of GRRM's ramblings in later books published and planned.

They were reasonable faithful to the first three books and as long as they keep doing so, as much as possible, for the "core" characters that is good enough for me. Anyone who thinks AFFC/ADWD could have been faithfully adapted to the screen has no idea about TV adaptation IMO.

There's surely absolutely massive (and potentially limitless) prequel possibilities as well.

Asshai and the Shadowlands would be awesome. More red priests and fire god stuff.

Funnily I was reading the first book last night, where Dany gets the witch to heal Khal Drogos wounds (who she eventually burns in the show), and she's talking about how she learned her healing in Asshai from a man that Jorah identifies as a maester from the Citadel in Old Town.

So much potential smile

Holy Crap!
Al Swearengen is joining the cast???!!
The level of cursing is going to reach uncharted territories.
If he doesn't get to say "cocksuckers!" at least once, I will be most upset.

There are theories regarding Aerys Targaryen and Tywin's wife, but I think if Tyrion is half Targ it rather spoils his character development. I'd be more inclined to suggest the Lannister twins aren't actually Tywin's (there is a certain amount of evidence to back that one up).

This does run counter to the three Targaryens for three dragons theory though - unless it's not Tyrion that rides.

None are significant characters right now, but the show (and books) have a long way to go. If Jon is to be a rider then either the dragons or he have some significant travelling to do.

Yes, but the Red Wedding happened because Rob didn't marry one of his daughters. The Frey's have now lost power/influence/security now that his daughter was killed.
Hmm, that made me think. I believe ultimately, Frey would still have killed Rob even if he hadn't married someone else. He lost WInterfell and was marching home, Roose and Walder might still have done the dirty at the King who 'lost the North.'

I think a lot of the actors are contracted for at least 7 seasons so they could easily be available for more if needed.

Personally I think they will dodge the issue like they always do at HBO and do season 7 in two parts, they've done it enough in the past with Sopranos, Mad Men for example.

I'll be amazed if the third dragon is Tyrell. There aren't enough Tyrell's who could do it IMO. Margaery isn't an outright power player, she's a manipulator

Lady Olenna? I think I heard Tywin say she was an old dragon.

Forgotten his name (not a good sign of a significant character!) but Margery's brother is pretty handy with a lance- he unseated the Mountain (with a bit of cheating) and lost to Brienne which is no great shame.

He just strikes me as too much of a wet blanket to be kicking ass across Westeros on a dragon compared even to Bran.

Lady Olena would be far funnier though. She'd have no qualms about baking everyone. hehe

I envy you.

read them all as quickly as you in succession.
The character you reference is directly referenced in the last book...first book published in 1995, last book published around five years ago. The work gone into this is admirable.
