We haven't actually heard Ned recounting the story so don't know exactly how he told it...
In the books (A Clash of Kings) when we first meet Jojen & Meera it's at a Harvest feast held by Bran when they come to renew House Reed's fealty to the King in the North (Rob).

Bran recalls his father telling him the Kingsguard were once a shining example, and the finest knight he ever saw was Ser Arthur Dayne, who would have killed him but for Howland Reed. His father became sad at that and spoke no further, but now Bran wishes he had asked what he meant.

have them on the kindle at the moment
You know I meant in the TV show, the books are sperate hehewink

He obviously never mentioned Dayne getting a knife through the throat, he says he was told Ned beat him, when he didn't really.
He didn't even say he was told he beat him. There's no one left standing but them two, it's a fight to the death and Brandon is one of the results of his father not dying that day. So Brandon pulls the conclusion his father surely must've beaten him.

I do 'get' the Ned character a bit, but I think it's a bit hypocritical to attack one guy with 4 without any problems, then when he gets stabbed from behind he goes all nobel on him.
Bran does say he has heard the story multiple times, so Ned obviously spoke about it more than once. By the sounds of it he never said 'so I sliced his throat with his own sword, straight after someone else had already 99% killed him' As has been said, his telling is his own, the flashback (I think) was supposed to show us that stories do get told differently depending on who's telling them.

So the thinking is that the Faith Militant found the Hound before he died, bring him back to KL, and he's ready to be the FM champion in trial by combat?

I suppose nursing him back to health may be the reason they've not progressed the trial further. There's been a couple of comments about why the delay this season hasn't there?

confused

The Faith Militant are under the control of the High Septon (High Sparrow); they are the ones that you see guarding him.

The FM are far more likely to kill The Hound on sight than rescue and bring him back to health.

Lancel Lannister is the most likely FM Champion as he has already pledged himself to the High Septon, has a grudge against Cersei and is in King's Landing.

It's just too complicated and wide ranging to enjoy if I try to follow everything that's going on and keep up with all the characters. Example above: someone mentioned Lacel Lannister. WTF? Who he? No idea. People and Houses and places and countries keep springing up out of nowhere. Just can't hold down my job, run my household and enjoy some time off if I try to keep up with everything in this show.

So, I'm just going to enjoy it as a bit of escapism every week and hope for boobs.

I hope not. Aside from splitting the Lannisters I can't see him doing much. laugh Who is suspected of curing the Hound in the books- is he a red priest or the Seven?

I also wonder if Cersei's acess to Varys' spies will be the downfall of Littlefinger. In KL they were both good at finding the dirt on each other, but it was very much a cold war.

At first I thought it would be Varys at threat from Quyburn, but Cersei specifically mentioned a whole lot of places, none of them in Essos.

Well, he knows Cersei is guilty for a start laugh

We don't know, hints are dropped that the Hound survived and now makes a living as a gravedigger at a monastery, where he has supposedly found some kind of inner peace; but also that he is dead; and we know that one of the Brave Companions took the dog helm from his grave site, and was responsible for keeping the dear of The Hound alive by his actions

If The Hound IS coming back, it is a much better guarded secret than Jon Snow's return laugh Rory hasn't even been spotted in Ireland, let alone on the set.

Lancel is the one that Cersei was fking whilst Jamie was away - he was one of King Robert's squires; more importantly the one that gave Robert the wine that killed him

I would counter your 'its to complicated to follow' with - what is the point of watching if you don't pay attention?

You guys need better tv's. Perfectly visible on my old but in its time top of the range, Panasonic CRT.
It's a brand new 4k/3D Bravia... Picture is perfect on everything else which is why I resent changing the brightness levels just for GoT!
I have a brand new 4k/3D panasonic and my 1080p copy was brilliant, fairly low backlight too. You do need a dark room to watch it though. And if you have 4k it really depends how it upscales.

Isn't that the ONLY point?

Afraid I struggled through season 1 and never bothered after that...

Blimey. I vaguely remember Robert dying now you come to mention it, don't recall Chertsey or whatever she's called having any bouncy-bouncy though, and that was in series 1, wasn't it? So 5 years ago. I can't remember what I had for dinner last night.

Is it OK if I just enjoy the show in my own way rather then hiving off 2/3rds of my ever-diminishing brain power remembering details? Cheers.

So that's four reasons. Keep 'em coming! Quite liked the sweary northern bloke last nigh putting the frighteners on the psycho Boltonian geezer.

So swearing, reason 5.

Based upon the 'cleganebowl' speculation...

Best way to create the one on one combat in this scenario is trial by combat. Currently, we've seen no one in the Faith Militant who would stand up to the Frankenmountain for 5 seconds. So it all comes down to who's going to be the FM champion to make it a worthwhile T-by-C.

That delay of the trial has enabled the Frankenmountain to be available to Cersei. They've gotta have something in the bank, as the High Sparrow doesn't seem too fussed and it's pretty obvious that this is the route she'll take...
